Just wasted 2 bottles of water on a hot day. and over an hour.
I did not see who even suggested this is mildly an attraction for tourists or historic parts. There was no plaque or signs showing what it was, and, the view was nothing spectacular from atop.
Save your breath and don't go there. From Central Station (I don't even suggest getting off at this station) go toward West, to the mid-level escalator area or Sheung Wan subway stop area to see the little markets shops, and hills with tones of steps. All these Western areas are hilly sides with steps, naturall, and, with more established neighborhoods.
This Gas Lamps area is a merely a back alley for the delivery and the garage access of tall buildings, and, once you go up to the top of the steps, the Ice House St is even worse, narrow and steep for anyone to walk, with nothing to look at. There is no point of going up here.
Do not climb up this way, from Central stop. Go toward Queen's Road, and stay on the bottom of the hill, but, on Queens Road, you still face some cocky expats (not all are rude) and government workers during the office hours.
I never like this Central Stop area. It feels like Bank stop in London M-F. And, this Duddell street steps should be scratched from the...
Read moreThis is a response to Ethan L's review from 2 days ago: it's true, compared to other spots in HK and the rest of the world in 2018, this is "nothing special" though this tiny unremarkable site holds (held) HK's only two gas lamps ever installed by the old Brits. To me, it's a corner of HK that reminds us of the pre-handover days, but that only applies to a small number of us. Perhaps the rest of the world thinks us all fools.
Comparing to actual tourist spots, or places of historical and cultural relevance, this is definitely nowhere near the top. Central was never on my list of top places to see either, I prefer old neighbourhoods like Sheung Wan (century old tea house and old shops selling traditional sweets and pastries) that take me back in time, but I digress.
Sadly, the lamps and balustrades were severely damaged during the Typhoon Mangkhut and, depending on the current men in charge , may never be restored to its former state.
Perhaps this will be completely removed, not just on googlemap, and that would be the end of your worries.
Perhaps this could make you feel better...
Read moreFor those seeking out the historic remnants of Colonial Hong Kong, one of the fun stops to make in the Central District is that of Duddell Street. Here you find a granite slab street (basically it is a pedestrian staircase) built between 1875 and 1889 and named after early colonial landowners George and Fredrick Duddell.
Of equal or perhaps more interest are the two sets of gas lamps at the top and bottom of the Duddell staircase. These were the first and oldest gas lamps in Hong Kong. To this day, the gas lamps are turned on at night, offering perspective of what Hong Kong's first street lighting would have been like in the late 19th century.
In the end, a quick and fun stop to make for history buffs and anyone else who plans to spend time in this area of the Central district. Give Duddell Street and the gas lamps a few minutes of your time before making way to other intended...
