I stayed at Ovolo Central for my quarantine in Hong Kong in December 2021. After spending 7 miserable days in Penny's Bay, we arrived at Ovolo to quarantine for another 14 days. The stay was so comfortable that it essentially turned into a very nice staycation.
Room: very spacious, lots of natural light since one side of the room is all windows, there's a small dining area with a nice minibar. There are only 2 rooms on every floor, and I like the quietness. In other Google reviews I saw a few people complain about the noise and vibration from nearby night clubs--we were on the 19th floor and did not feel/hear anything from the outside even on Christmas eve and New Years eve.
Bed: The mattress was perfect. I have back problems so I always worry about beds being too soft and such. No back pain at all here, and I had many nights of good sleep. I brought my own memory foam pillow to sleep on but I think their pillows are fine too.
Food: VERY DELICIOUS. You hear stories about the horrific food in other Hong Kong quarantine hotels but certainly not here. I think it helps that they cook their own food instead of contracting with a catering company (which is what most quarantine hotels do). The menu is very limited--a couple of choices for breakfast (the avocado toast is to die for by the way), and for lunch and dinner you get the same 3 choices. There was also complimentary happy hour everyday. The lack of variety did not bother me because the food is just so tasty, especially comparing to Penny's Bay where you get tons of choices but no matter what you choose everything tastes equally awful. When I get bored with their menu I ordered delivery from Foodpanda--since the hotel is located in Central there are tons of great food options nearby in the Sheung Wan area.
Service: Top notch. Staffs are friendly and helpful and easy to reach via Whatsapp. They brought up food delivery and deliveries dropped off by friends/family within minutes. Because of this food is always hot when delivered. I guess that's a perk of staying in a boutique hotel, you just feel like you get all the attention you need.
Bathroom: We loved the rain shower and the bathroom is very spacious with lots of space to move around, and lots of surfaces to place our stuff.
The only downside from my experience is that they have a steep cancellation policy, no refunds unless you cancel 14 days before your stay. It's somewhat pricey, and you are required to pay for the whole stay when you book, so it left a bit of a bad feeling when I booked. However, they were willing to change dates and cancel/refund parts of our stay as long as the change is due to changes in govt policy or flight cancellations so that was a big relief. Didn't really appreciate receiving the refund only weeks after our checkout and being charged a credit card fee, but I do understand.
I am just grateful that we ended this whole HK quarantine fiasco on a high note. Also appreciated the hotel giving as a bottle of champagne and a nice dinner to celebrate the end of our quarantine. If I have to quarantine again, or need somewhere to stay again in HK, Ovolo is definitely my...
Read moreEdit: Echoing what another customer/reviewer mentioned. The noise level from this hotel as unbearable for me If you're a light to moderate sleeper, request a higher-floor or talk to the front-desk at checkin, they are very nice and accommodating. I was told it's not as bad in other rooms, but declined knowing myself after a ruff first night sleep. *I was on the 9th floor facing the Centrium Stariway.
Here's the thing, there’s a bar nearby "Shots" that plays such horrible house music past the 5AM hour, even with ear plugs music can still be heard. The remainder of the bars in the area are closed at 2AM. But unfortunately this gutter of a bar is something obviously Ovolo can't control, and the staff did try to make things accommodating as they could.
I booked another hotel at 4AM cause the noise on a Thursday, telling of what Friday and Saturday nights stay would bring, and checked out the following morning. I lost two nights of money as the manger wasn't willing to refund due to the noise being out of the hotels control. (See the followup)
The front desk staff were nice and understanding, even aligned about the noise from the bar. The room themselves are also nice, with a lot of amenities which is why I booked it. It's a great location for Central as well. Followup: Horace the hotel manger reached out personally and invited the feedback and conversation about the stay. In the end he aligned and processed the refund for the additional 2 nights after having a better understanding of my...
Read moreWe stayed here for three days and two nights. While the hotel is technically in Central, the location isn’t as convenient as it sounds. To get to Queen’s Road, the malls, and most restaurants, you need to walk about 15–20 minutes downhill. Going down is fine, but the uphill climb back to the hotel is exhausting, especially after a full day out.||The hotel itself looks chic with an art-deco boutique style, but the experience didn’t match the design. The elevator situation was terrible, during our stay only one was working, and it serves over 20 floors. It’s small, shaky, and felt unsafe. The layout is also awkward, with reception separated from the room elevators by another entrance, which makes it confusing and inconvenient.||The rooms are nicely decorated but very small for the price. The bed was comfortable, but the bathroom design wasn’t well thought out. The glass bathroom door is right beside the bed, so light from the bathroom spills into the room, making it impossible to keep it dark for sleeping.||Breakfast is served at the hotel’s vegan restaurant. Food was fine, but the restaurant only serves breakfast and closes at 4 pm. There’s no option for dinner, which makes it less convenient if you were hoping to eat at the hotel.||Overall, the vibe is chic, but between the uphill walk, tiny rooms, awkward layout, and unreliable elevators, it’s not worth the price. I wouldn’t...
