When spending time in the St. Lazarus Parish, one of the minor attractions you can visit is the St. Lazarus Church, located across from the Chui Lok Chi Mansion. This is a conservative and simple church that is one of the oldest in Macau.
Historically, the first building was a hermitage used to treat lepers back in the 1560-70s. At that time, the building was referred to as 'Our Lady of Hope', a name the church is still locally referred to now.
Compared to the brightly painted and more decorative Catholic churches found throughout Macau, St. Lazarus is rather modest. The church front is quite basic with a single tower and similar facade to what you see at St. Anthony's Church at Cameos Square.
The interior is equally simple and humble, being an open nave with walls and alter area mostly clear of decor. There is a nice organ behind the alter. We've been lucky to hear it on a couple of occasions, while visiting and taking a rest from the summer heat. It is nice to listen to for a few minutes prior to being on your way to see other attractions in the St. Lazarus Parish.
Overall, St. Lazarus church is an ok place to stop by for a few minutes if you plan to spend time in the St. Lazarus Parish during your time in Macau. Otherwise, you can see several more attractive and decorative churches in the Historic City Centre of Macau...
