The Golden Gate is the largest and most important of the four gates leading into Diocletian's Palace. It sits at the northern end of the walled palace and it is said that only Diocletian and his family were allowed to enter through this gate. There is so much history packed into this small area I'd highly recommend doing one of the free walking tours available - its a great introduction and way to orient yourself. Freetour.com does a great tour lasting just over an hour and Ana (the guide) is very entertaining and knowledgeable - having worked on some of the restoration.

The Golden Gate was the main entrance to the Roman Palace and faced the large town of Salona, a few miles away, before that was destroyed by Avars and Slavs. Oneof four gates into the palace complex the Golden Gate was and is the most magnificent. The statues are now gone but the gate stands with the original wall to either side, allowing you to picture it in all its glory. There is an information plaque there and the other side of the park next to the gate is Diocletian's Dream - a VR experience that lets you see the gate and palace as it was originally built.

Golden Gate in Split is an incredible historical site that’s a must-visit. The architecture is stunning, and it offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of the city. Standing in front of this majestic entrance to Diocletian’s Palace, you can’t help but feel transported back in time. The surrounding area is vibrant, with charming streets and plenty of cafes where you can sit and take in the atmosphere. It’s a perfect spot for history lovers, and even casual visitors will appreciate the beauty and significance of the Golden Gate. A true gem in Split!

Roman emperor Diocletian built long time ago nice palace and this was Northern gate called Golden (Porta Aurea). Palace was abandoned but when Roman empire collapsed survivors from capital city of Salona and other places found shelter in palace and from them city of Split started. Now it is touristic attraction and nice place to start exploring whole palace which can be seen as integral part of medieval city. Unfortunately like in Dubrovnik not many live there year long but there are nice restaurants and thing to do and see.

The Golden Gate of Split. This was the main entrance to the Palace that Emperor Diacletian walked through back in the year 305 CE. The gate used to have statues of Diocletian, Maximian, Galerius and Constantius Chlorus. Back then, this gate was only allowed to be used by the emperor and members of his family. You should visit this as it is a spectacular entrance to the city and also close to the statue of Bishop Gregory of Nin.

The Northern Gate is called the Golden Gate because it was the entrance gate of the emperor in contrast to the Iron Gate, where the army entered. It one of the four main Roman gates of the Diocletian's Palace. It was elaborately decorated but over the course of time the gate was sealed off and lost its columns and statues. It was only reopened and repaired in modern times.
