We arrived at 11:45, 15 mins before the advertised opening time and waited until almost 12:30 before they opened. By this time there was quite a queue so clearly a popular place and I would advise turning up in plenty of time. The menu was still being written when we arrived, testament to how fresh the dishes are. They serve what they can make that day based an availability of ingredients and whatever is caught at sea. Food is rarely fresher than this. We started with burrata and had truffle pork pasta and tuna steak for mains. The burrata was served atop a fresh salad complete with balsamic dressing. Nothing to write home about here, a fairly average burrata with standard creamy notes. I would recommend being more adventurous. The mains featured underwhelming presentation. However this feeds into the core concept of this establishment: this is not fine dining, it is home cooked Croatian sustenance. Presentation aside, the mains shone much brighter than the starter. The truffle pork pasta, which can so often be overpowered with truffle flavours, was well balance. Creamy notes with flavours of rosemary accompany the primary flavours. I have seen other pictures where this looks to be served with a green herby garnish of some description, I would have liked to have seen this on mine. Tuna can be fishy, chewy and flavourless. I'm happy to report none of these boons afflict this serving. Teeth press effortlessly through the fish with little effort. It has been served rare with only a cautionary stint in the pan. A slightly hotter pan could have produced a better surface crisp whilst maintaining the internal temperature but that would be a particularly picky observation. There are lots of other interesting experiences to be had on the menu. My advise is to be adventurous and let the experience of the chefs shine through. I would recommend this restaurant highly for home made Croatian dishes.

There is a reason why Andrew Zimmern referred this place on his website and Rick Stein covered it in one of his videos! Simple, home cooked but extremely delicious, served by some lovely people. As others have mentioned, the menu changes daily based on the ingredients they source. You'll notice in the pictures that even the pasta type in some of the common dishes changes each time. But this reflects how freshly and lovingly the food is made. We ordered the yummy zucchini with prawns pasta in red sauce. In my case, I got quite small prawns unlike what I noticed in some of the other pictures where they had the larger ones. However, the dish was outstanding and I counted 20 prawns in it! Hence, who's to complain. In dishes with smaller prawns, several times even reputed restaurants will not de-vein and you'll get grit in your mouth. But not here, they were all thoroughly cleaned to my surprise. The truffle and pork pasta was also very nicely done. The icing on the cake was literally a slice of chocolate cake topped with chocolate ganache, we were in heaven!

We really enjoyed Villa Spiza! It was cash only but its worth going out of your way to get some cash to dine here. We arrived at around 6pm and only had to wait a little to get a table. We sat in the kitchen area. It was a cool experience to watch how the chef and cooks worked. We ordered the burrata, seabass and pasta with capers and anchovies. It was our first time trying a grilled fish and it did not disappoint. The skin was crispy and the fish meat was flaky. The potatoes served with the fish were delicious! The burrata was served with a crispy bread. And the pasta had a light kick of spice and was very good. We tried to come again the next day but this place gets really busy at 7 so try to get here early if you don't want to wait too long. The menu changes every day, so be sure to have space to try everything you want because it might not be available the next day.

This was recommended by our hotel host, he said this was really authentic and good food. I must say I wasn't entirely impressed. The restaurant was super easy to miss and they had two dining rooms along the same street kind of across from one another. The dining room we were in wasn't very big I think only 8 tables max? And we were seated and somewhat forgotten about, it was super busy and the staff were zipping back and forth. The menu is written every day and I overheard the staff tell some (not all) other tables that the menu writer missed the seafood section of the day and listed a couple items that were orderable but not told to everyone. I wish I had known but instead we got the pasta with meat stew and the veal risotto. Both were homey meals and pretty good portions. I wasn't blown away though, kinda disappointed. It was 250 kn for both dishes.

A local friend who lives in the old town recommended this place and brought me here. His family likes this place. He's a local, so he knows the restaurants well. This place has a different menu according to what fresh ingredients they have. I really enjoyed our lamb, which was served with potatoes. Potatoes were also very yummy. Nice staff too. Cute street to sit on with the outside tables. And the indoor seating looked cozy too. I recommend going for a meal here if you're in the center. Good quantity, good quality and decent price compared to other places around here. I ended up having 2 full meals out of mine. Took mine home to have the next day. And even made a 3rd small meal, midnight snack out of it.

We came here on a recommendation and were so glad we did! They don't take reservations, (nor do they take down names, you just queue up outside) we were quoted 45 minutes, but thankfully they got us in in under fifteen. There are tables outside - as well as across the street, but we loved sitting in the main space with the open kitchen - you really feel like you're eating a home cooked meal out of someones kitchen! We had the pasta with minced pork and truffle and the bonito fish, both were great! The service was hectic but that just added to vibe and the charm. Definitely has a more 'homestyle' vibe than many of the other places we ate around Split. I would certainly recommend!
