This synagoge is impressive. It's the second largest synagoge in Europe and third largest in the world. It was built by architect Emanuel Klotz in 1888 after the initial plan by architect Max Fleischer was rejected by the mayor. The synagoge survived WWII by being turned into a storage hall. During Communism it was shut down. The last service took place in 1973. It was not until the 90s that the dilapidated building was renovated. Today, it is beautifully maintained and has a lot of information available, found on digital displays on the first floor. It's worth browsing through them.

Likely, like many others, I was also in a synagogue for the first time when I visited this one. Just like all places of worship, this synagogue is very large and impressive. However, there is an entrance fee, but in exchange, men are given a kippah - essentially as a souvenir. In general, if you're in Pilsen and have never been inside a synagogue, this is a good opportunity to have a look and learn a bit more about Judaism.

Nur ca. 250 m südwestlich vom zentralen Platz Pilsens steht außerhalb des Altstadtringes die Große Synagoge (Velká synagoga). Sie präsentiert sich eindrucksvoll mit verschiedenen Architekturstilen und zwei hohen Türmen. Europas zweitgrößte Synagoge und laut Synagogenprospekt drittgrößte der Welt wurde 1892 im maurisch-romanischen Stil erbaut. Anfangs plante die jüdische Gemeinde ihre Synagoge übrigens noch größer und im rein neogotischen Stil, auch sollten beide Türme noch höher werden. Der Entwurf wurde jedoch von den tschechischen Stadtvätern abgelehnt: Kein jüdischer Bau durfte die St. Batholomäus-Kirche in den Schatten stellen. Heute erinnert die restaurierte Synagoge an die einst große jüdische Gemeinde Pilsens, die durch die Nationalsozialisten ihr gewaltsames Ende fand. Von den 3.200 deportierten Pilsner Juden kehrten nach dem Krieg nur 116 zurück. Das Innere der Synagoge ist äußerst sehenswert; hin und wieder finden hier auch Konzerte statt. Im Eingangsbereich werden jüdische Literatur, Souvenirs und koscherer Wein verkauft. (So – Fr 10-18 Uhr; Eintritt: 80 CZK)

The synagogue is an interesting visit. The structure is impressively large and can host many worshippers on the ground floor and the balcony. The temple is very beautifully decorated with wood and plaster finishing and many religious ornaments. Some walls have amazing stained-glass windows. There was a nice photography exhibition when we were there as well.

This place is iconic and monumental. If I am correct, it is 4th biggest synagogue in the world. I was walking around it daily and I've never been inside before... The ticket price is a bit too high for what you can see... So go to Lokal order 2 "šnyts" and enjoy just the outside view for the same price from there... That's the proper Pilsen religion

Beautifully restored and atmospheric. While we were there, they had a very emotive exhibit on photos from Ukraine. The computer information booths on the second floor are very worth spending some time browsing as they have an extensive collection of photos from the restorations (before and after). There's a small souvenir shop at the back.
