Původní kostel byl založen pravděpodobně společně s městem kolem roku 1295, stavba současného začala po roce 1342. Vznikem Plzeňské diecéze v roce 1993 se z farního kostela stala katedrála. Katedrální trojlodí má samo o sobě uctyhodné rozměry - je dlouhé 58 metrů, široké 30 metrů a jeho klenby dosahují výšky pětadvaceti metrů - proto se kostelní věž nezdá tak vysoká, ale opak je pravdou, což si uvědomíte, až vyšlapete 301 schodů na ochoz ve výši 62 metrů. S celkovou výškou 102,6 metrů je tato štíhlá kráska nejvyšší kostelní věží v České republice.

Some stairs to the top were quite steep or narrow, further more it was all worth it as the view over the town was amazing.
