Saints Peter & Paul Basilica — Attraction in Prague

The Neo-Gothic church is an amazing dominant feature of Vyšehrad, visible from many places in Prague. However, nothing compares to the view from the Vltava surface if you are passing by boat from Smíchov in the southern direction to Braník. The Capitol Basilica of Vyšehrad was founded by Prince Vratislav II. in 1070. During repairs after the fire in 1249, the Romanesque foundation of the building disappeared and was replaced by a Gothic triple nave. Baroque alterations took place in 1708 - 1711, later in the period 1723 - 1730 with the participation of František Maxmilián Kaňka. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries the basilica was regotized by Josef Mocker. The church towers were designed by architect František Mikš, who finished the church reconstruction in 1903. Mocker also designed most of the interior of the church. In 1988 - 1994 the interior of the church was extensively restored, and in 2003 Pope John Paul II. promoted it to Basilica Minor. There is a memorial plaque on the façade of the church, which commemorates the baptism of 14 Czech princes in Regensburg in 845. Guided tours of the basilica during mass are not permitted, individual group visits at other times can be arranged in advance by telephone.

Novogotický chrám tvoří úžasnou dominantu Vyšehradu viditelnou zdaleka z mnoha míst Prahy. Nic se ale nevyrovná pohledu z hladiny Vltavy, pokud projíždíte lodí od Smíchova jižním směrem k Braníku. Kapitulní vyšehradská bazilika byla založena knížetem Vratislavem II. v roce 1070. Při opravách po požáru roku 1249 zanikl z větší části románský základ stavby a byl nahrazena gotickým trojlodím. K barokním úpravám došlo v letech 1708 - 1711, později v období 1723 - 1730 za účasti Františka Maxmiliána Kaňky. Na přelomu 19. a 20. století byla bazilika regotizována Josefem Mockerem. Věže kostela projektoval architekt František Mikš, který úpravu kostela v roce 1903 dokončil. Mocker navrhl i většinu vnitřního zařízení kostela. V letech 1988 - 1994 byl interiér chrámu nákladně zrestaurován, následně v roce 2003 povýšil papež Jan Pavel II. chrám na papežskou baziliku minor. Na průčelí chrámu je pamětní deska, která připomíná pokřtění 14 českých knížat v Řezně roku 845.
