"The shooting range was originally used by the Royal Copenhagen Shooting Association and the Danish Brotherhood as a shooting practice area.
In 1887, the Shooting Society built a 20-meter-high and 70-meter-long shooting wall against Istedgade so that passersby on the densely populated Istedgade would not be hit by stray bullets.
The society held an annual bird shooting competition, where they shot at wooden parrots on poles. The lucky person who "shot the parrot" was crowned Bird King. This tradition continued until 1946, when the garden was converted into a public park.
