For my birthday last month, I dared to try a place, I never thought to explore before. Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark was a delight to all my senses. Although I missed the sheer delight of its Christmas magic, I was not disappointed in its history and charm. The Best Western Hotel Hebron gave me the base I needed for my exploration. Below, my review.
Pros- The hotel was about a thirty-minute drive by cab from the airport. The location itself, tucked away along a side street, allowed for easy walking access onto the main streets, eateries, and transportation stations. The hotel is also located near Tivoli Gardens which, to my disappointment, was closed after the Christmas season and not due to open again until March.
Upon arrival, the desk clerks, Cealie, and Alexander, were very pleasant, professional and offered warm wishes when I explained that this was my birthday celebration trip. Throughout my stay, they were always a welcome face to return to for questions or directions.
The room, although basic in style, provided the simple needs; a sitting area with coffee table, desk area for my writings, basic bed in a twin like style. The compact bathroom consisted of a sink, a squared off flooring area with a shower curtain and toilet. My room looked down into the courtyard area with other rooms across the way. The sleep quality on the right side of the mattresses, near the bathroom was fair. I switched to the left side, closest to the wall, and found that my rest quality was much better, as though that mattress was not used as often. Radiator heat kept the room at a nice temperature throughout my stay. The only time I used the television was in the late evening as I settled in for the night while watching Danish programs and learning a new language.
The complimentary full-breakfast buffet provided a wonderful way to start my early mornings. I would slip in at 7 during the weekend or 0630 during the week to enjoy the stillness of the world outside while indulging on fresh loafs of bread, cheese, veggies, teas, and juices. The buffet was always a feast for the eyes with so many things to choose from beside the standard fare of eggs, bacon, pancakes, and waffles. Try the yogurt, overnight oats, jams, currents, and other foods to delight your taste buds.
Housekeeping kept my room very clean and replaced the linen during my stay.
Cons- In regards to housekeeping, my only complaint is that the housekeeper on our floor, had a tendency not to knock and announce herself before entering the room. It could have proved embarrassing in a couple of situations had I not been dressed.
On my first day in my room, I did not realize that there was slight lift to step into the bathroom. The toe of my boot hit the wood piece, I lost my footing, fell against the sink and while trying to get my balance, fell against the shower wall. Thank goodness I was still holding onto the base of the sink otherwise I would have fallen to the floor. There should be some sort of yellow caution tape or indicator to let people know of the slight change from the main room into the bathroom. During the remainder of my stay, I kept a pair of shoes near the area as a reminder to step up/down to prevent another near miss.
FYI-As in most American hotels, I am use to having a face towel as well as hand and bath towels. This is not always the case in most European hotels. As a back-up, I always bring along a face towel or reusable facial/body scrub brush.
Overall: I have begun my plans to return to Copenhagen for the 2024 Christmas season and look forward to my stay again at the...
Read moreIt's always a challenge to find a room in Europe that will sleep three adults. While this hotel covered us on that front, there were still several things that could be done better and some long-term/expensive renovations that need to take place.||The hotel has an easy-to-reach location regardless of whether you're coming in via the train or the metro. Either way it's only a 4-8 minute walk, even pulling a suitcase - though heads-up that a lot of the sidewalks are cobblestone so your suitcase wheels may take a beating!||First the good. The staff was terrific, super-friendly and always helpful. When it turned out that the safe in our room needed new batteries, we didn't have to wait long at all for someone to come take care of it.||The bedding was exactly as advertised: we had two twin beds and a daybed, already made up so we didn't have to put the sheets on it ourselves.||The courtyard was lovely, a cool place to relax and chat with wi-fi that worked well - at least in that spot.||The breakfast was extensive, loads of choices and if you couldn't find something to eat there, you're a very picky eater indeed.||We were able to have our luggage stored on our last day and were impressed with the security of the room and how surprisingly large it was.||Room for improvement - first the easy stuff. While the wi-fi worked great on the ground floor and was pretty good in the restaurant on the floor above, the guest rooms were on the four floors above the restaurant and by the time the signal reached our room on the third of the four guest room floors it was so weak as to be useless. That's not really acceptable in 2024 and signal boosters are not that expensive.||The building is old and so are the electrical outlets. We had to be very cautious that our electronics stayed plugged in overnight to charge. One little nudge could cause the plug to come loose. Swapping those out is a relatively small change that would make a big difference. Also adding USB charging outlets would be welcome.||In the shower there was only a single bottle of cleaning product meant to be used for both hair and body. While shampoo can be used in a pinch for body wash, I have no idea if it was actually shampoo or body wash in the bottle and there was no conditioner. Three separate products is an easy fix.||I also found it very odd that, other than on the ground floor, there was no UP button to push for the elevator. That meant when leaving the restaurant to go back to your room, you first have to walk down to the lobby then around to the elevator where you can push the UP button.||But most of all I'm still astounded that there's no air conditioning. Our own fault for not noticing when we booked our room - and because we needed 3 beds we may not have had a choice anywhere else - but my goodness it was warm. They did provide us a fan but of course there's no real way to get a cross-draft. I was glad I'd brought my own sheet to sleep under because the provided duvet would have given me heat stroke (though I'd love it in the winter!). I realize this is not a cheap or easy fix but for the price being charged I'm still amazed. I get it that once upon a time Scandinavia probably never needed A/C but that is no longer the case. Hotel rooms need to be able to reach a minimum of 21C overnight (and personally I like it about 17-18C), especially if the only cover provided is a thick duvet.||If I came back to the area during a cooler time of year I'd be happy to stay here again but if it's warm enough to wear shorts then it's too warm for me to...

March 8th, 20:00. Following a gruesome 8 hour drive from Hamburg (via Kolding), with semi blizzard conditions, we eventually arrived at the hotel, adjoining the Gentleman’s Club…
After dinging the reception’s bell, we weren’t greeted with a smile, or welcoming words, just a stern face, as though we’d interrupted the receptionist. It was a though us arriving was a complete inconvenience.
As we’d driven, I asked about parking as it’s pretty complicated with different areas and charges. There wasn’t a pay and display machine so I asked, “do you know how we pay…?” The response was pretty much pay at the machine (which there wasn’t one) and then passed us a key and that was that. Never once a smile…
Anyhow…..quick google of….”how can I pay for parking in Copenhagen?” Got the answer within seconds and paid my parking online!
So, we get into the ice box of room, that’s cold, drafty and may I say, dirty (see pictures). The air con doesn’t provide hot air, only cold and the one radiator in the room eventually manages to warm the place up after a few hours. The windows are from c1950 and let the drafts in. Bonus…underfloor heating in the bathroom. Sink area looks grubby though. The glasses in the still showing the toothpaste marks from the previous occupiers where they’ve popped their toothbrushes in the glass.
The bed frame has a heavy cotton surround covered in hair and “marks” whilst the cushions had a strange dust/stained pattern as the pictures show. No one wants this when getting into bed.
The coffee cups were also dirty.
Breakfast. Think danish breakfast - Danish Pastries, delicious bacon…. Reality check…no Danish pastries and the bacon was so salty, you’d need a gallon on water to quench your thirst. The muesli was very good, and the selection of cheese and bread, also good. The waitresses were also very pleasant.
So, as a whole, £260 for two nights accommodation including breakfast. You get what you pay for I guess.
It wouldn’t be a place...
