I would give this place in total a 3.5/5. The location is the best part. So close to everything and extremely convenient.
We stayed in a 6 mixed dorm room. The room is smaller than in the pictures but not too bad. There were two bunk beds and then there were two twin beds stuck next to eachother. I was travelling with my partner and we got assigned the twin beds so that was okay. But if you were travelling alone and there is a chance you'd get a twin bed next to a stranger , that is crazy. I don't know the policy regarding that but I didn't read anything about it at the time of booking.
Under each bunk bed came two drawers that one can add locks to. But the twin beds didn't have that. Instead there were three extra standard lockers in the room. The lockers might fit some types of carryons but it is definitely more of a backpack size. The drawer lockers are not super deep so I prefer the standalone lockers instead.
The bathroom was okay. Comes with towels and soap and hair and body wash. We had hot water the whole time we were there. The room can get a bit warm since it's 6 people in a small room so be sure to open the windows. There are electrical outlets next to each bed. The room also had a small open closet with hangers . The mattresses could be a bit more comfortable, but they're not rock hard .
The room was cleaned every day.
The biggest issue we had was our key cards did not work the whole time we were there (3 nights). We had to get someone from the staff to open the door for us every time we needed to go in. And while it is 24hour desk, they might be busy with other clients and it was just really not convenient. We weren't compensated for the discomfort at all, perhaps a drink at the bar or a complimentary breakfast or free bike rental or really anything would have helped but there wasn't anything offered for us regarding this inconvenience.
There is a lot going on in the hostel so the atmosphere is nice. There is love music as well. There is both indoor and outdoor areas to sit..
There is luggage storage lockers which can fit suitcases. You can rent them for 30kr for 6 hours, or rent them by the hour or by 24 hours. We were told by the desk it was 25kr but when we got to the lockers it was 30kr, and it accepts coins or card. However, it does not accept 2kr coins or 1kr coins which was not clearly shown anywhere or communicated by anyone to us. So that was inconvenient as well.
We had breakfast one of the days and it was okay, the main thing is that there is a possibility that there is no space if for example, a huge group is staying at the hostel and then they all go to eat at once. My advice is don't book the breakfast in advance, rather in the morning when you go down to eat that's when to pay to ensure that it will be the experience you want.
There is a coffee machine, juices, hot chocolate, hot water, teas, milk, and oat milk (only non-dairy option). There was sliced cheese and ham (including vegan options for both), yogurts , some fruit, jams, toast, cream cheese, boiled eggs, cereals, pastry , and some more things here and there. Good way to start the day if you know you won't have time to go somewhere for breakfast and the price is good too for Copenhagen.
Location is the best there is. Staff was nice too and the security guard as well.
We did not take any of the tours or rent the bikes so I can't...
Read moreMy time at Urban House was a bit of a mixed experience. I stayed for two nights and loved the location - Vesterbro is a busy & trendy district, right round the corner is the main station & it's ideally located for exploring the centre of the city. However, being a hostel, I didn't get much sleep over the Saturday/Sunday nights as people came & went past my private room on the first floor, clearly having had a good night in the local bars. There was fireworks both nights (from Tivoli, the famous amusement park behind the hostel). I can't blame the Hostel for this but I was disappointed how much noise was directly outside my window which overlooked the rear service exit - I could hear crates of empty bottles and bins being moved about and smell staff having smoke breaks as it wafted in my open window (for an asthmatic staying in a non-smoking hostel that disappointed me). It was a hot weekend so I needed to crack the window open to get fresh air.
The room itself was small and a little tired - scuffed paintwork, laminate peeling from the wall - but generally clean and tidy. There were no usb ports (I checked ahead, it seems some but not all rooms have them) so I relied on a plug adaptor. The big negative was what appeared to be a drain cover in the bathroom which had fungus gnats/drain flies coming out of it (see attached video)! Fortunately I didn't spend a lot of time in the room (I was out exploring the city) or I probably would have complained as, despite closing the bathroom door, I was finding them on the wall by the bed.
I opted to have the buffet breakfast which was 99 DKK (£11.50) per morning. It was a decent breakfast with a choice of breads, teas/coffees, cereals, cold meats/cheese, pastries. The dining area is quite small for such a big hostel - not a problem for me as I went down right at the start 630am but it was getting very busy when I had finished at 7am.
The staff were polite and efficient but it wasn't a particularly warm welcome. I did overhear one staff member tell someone to speak to someone else as they had finished their shift, despite standing behind the bar, which didn't give the best first impression, but this is the only major complaint I have - again, I wasn't in the room very long to make any requests from the staff.
For the price (which wasn't cheap) it's not the best place I've stayed but far, far from the worst. With a few simple improvements I think my overall opinion would have been much higher. I think it would be far more suited to young travellers rather than families or older couples (which in its defence, does seem to be it's target audience). Just a word of warning if you have mobility issues - on the first floor there is a very steep slope in the hallway which may cause people with walking...
Read moreI’m gonna leave this finally here after long rumination because the staff was always very nice and I had no problem with service while staying here.
But two things are just so crazy and horrendous. First - it’s an old building. A very, very old building. It gets cold in winter and sometimes doesn’t heat up. The walls are thin and one can hear everything. The lower bar area reminds of an 80s USA pub and everything is very very very old. Then bathrooms and rooms in general - probably from the 2000s. Like, its so old - if you touch anything ANYTHING - it just falls off. Everything is kept in clean and pristine condition but it is OLD. Now my beef is with Meininger. It’s a big group, that has many locations and wow I don’t know how on earth they are legitimising this horrendous condition of the hostel. They are milking it dry for money since ages - the location is absolutely prime. Cannot be better. Literally best in town. The There is absolutely no excuse, why they would not renovate this hostel by now. Being so greedy and stingy should be illegal. And hey, if the staff would not take care of it as it is - it would fall apart to a point where it would be illegal to even rent it out. Because it is just a pile of junk kept together with tape and some shoe glue. Absolutely ridiculous and I am so so mad about it.
Second point now, on TOP of it being basically a falling apart pile of junk, they have dynamic pricing. What do you mean, on booked out dates I have to pay (not kidding) up to SIX TIMES more of the original price. 6! Not one, not two, three, four…SIX! Excuse me? A bed for 185dkk, now going for 1085? That’s straight out extortion. That should be truly illegal. Absolutely out of this world. And if you put on top, that Meininger is just banking on the extra cash, profiting from old rental contracts making it ridiculously cheap and nice steal for them to just increase the profits and making the staff responsible to keep it “somehow running”. Meininger should be absolutely utterly embarrassed for letting this happen. Not re-investing even a penny into this golden cash cow is grotesque.
This place has such potential and it makes me absolutely mad that the top management don’t take the chance and make it a nice and affordable place for young people to stay at during their trips in such an expensive place as Copenhagen. Just greedy and entitled behaviour and I could go on essays about how distasteful I find this behaviour in the good year of 2025. It feels like we are financing some of the Meininger managers luxury vacations while literally having no warmth in...
