While many know the iconic Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, few realize that a smaller, original version resides peacefully in Paris’s Jardin du Luxembourg. Nestled among tree-lined paths and elegant flowerbeds, this bronze statue is a surprising yet meaningful sight.

Created by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the sculptor of the monumental Liberty in the U.S., this 2.85-meter replica was one of the first models he used when developing the final design gifted to America. Originally installed in 1906 near the western entrance of the garden, it stood as a symbol of friendship between France and the United States.

After being removed in 2011 for preservation and replaced with a copy, the original was moved to the Musée d'Orsay for safekeeping. However, the replica in the Luxembourg Gardens still draws visitors who stumble upon it while exploring the park’s fountains, statues, and charming Medici Palace.

The statue shows Liberty holding her torch high and a tablet inscribed with July 4, 1776 — the date of American independence. It’s a quiet reminder of the shared democratic ideals between two nations.

For those looking to uncover lesser-known stories in Paris, this graceful statue offers a thoughtful pause in one of the city’s most...

A hidden jem of Jardins de Luxembourg! Taking the number of all the paths you can actually follow inside the park, chances are not high you can easily run into it unless you read about it somewhere. It took me quite a while to finally find, but was well worth it. Of course the statue is not an original size of the one you find in NYC, it was just a prototype copy, but it is still big enough for you to have your selfie with. Moreover, the fact it is not really easy to locate it and not everyone knows about it, makes it a quiet tourist spot where you can have quite some one on one time with...

For the Exposition Universelle of 1900, Frédéric Bartholdi created a smaller version of the Statue of Liberty. It was placed outside Musée du Luxembourg in 1905 where it stood until 2014. It is currently on display at the entrance of Musée d’Orsay. This bronze replica stands in its place at Jardin du Luxembourg. On a beautiful fall day it attracts a lot of visitors. A meaningful visit for American tourists as the statue represents the enduring friendship between our two countries.
