Read moreSt. Michael's (Michaelskirche) is a late 16th-century church along Neuhauser Straße. It is one of many beautiful and interesting churches that you can visit in the Old Town.
Constructed by the Jesuits in Renaissance manner, St. Michael's has a beautiful facade. There are a great many niches filled with statues of various members of the Wittelsbach family who ruled Bavaria for centuries. These are worth spending a few minutes to see prior to entering and see the inside of St. Michael's. There is also an impressive sculpture of St. Michael's slaying a demon just above the door.
The interior of the church is attractive as well. You'll find the second largest barrel vault style nave in the world behind St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican. It is stylised in the manner of the counter-reformation movement of the time. You'll find numerous decorative altars in the side chapels as well as a large and attractive high altar in front.
There is an attractive pulpit, a detailed Eugene de Beauharnais monument and the Bronze of St. Michael in the back of the nave are all worth seeing. You can visit the underground Royal Crypt at St. Michael's (€2 per person) and see decorative tombs of the Wittelsbach family, including King Ludwig II and Maximilian I.
In the end, we very much enjoyed our 20-25 minute visit to St. Michael's. It is well worth including in your sightseeing plan if you want to visit some of the more impressive churches...
