My wife and I recently visited the Agricultural Museum of Mykonos, also known as Boni’s Windmill, situated in the heart of Mykonos Town (Chora). This unique open-air museum offered us a fascinating glimpse into the island’s agricultural past, coupled with breathtaking views of the Mykonos Bay.
We began our journey around 9:30 am from an observation deck located on a hairpin curve over Epar.Od. Mikonou road. The walk to the museum was a delightful experience, taking us through narrow, cobblestone sidewalks lined with traditional whitewashed houses. The vivid bougainvilleas cascading over the walls added a splash of colour to the pristine architecture, creating a picturesque backdrop for our stroll.
Arriving at the Agricultural Museum, we were immediately captivated by its charm. Perched on a hill, the museum overlooks the bay, offering stunning panoramic views. The museum itself is a treasure trove of historical agricultural tools and equipment. We explored items such as a traditional threshing machine, an oven, a wine press, a water wheel, a water tank, and a quaint dovecote. Each exhibit provided insight into the island’s farming heritage, revealing the ingenuity and hard work of past generations.
One of the highlights of our visit was the opportunity to step inside an authentic, still-functioning windmill. This iconic structure, which has been meticulously preserved, gave us a rare glimpse into the traditional milling process that was once vital to the local economy. The experience was both educational and awe-inspiring, allowing us to appreciate the craftsmanship and engineering behind these historical landmarks.
From the vantage point of Boni’s Windmill, we were treated to a spectacular view of Mykonos Bay, with its sparkling waters and the famous Mykonos windmills dotting the landscape. The scenery was simply breathtaking, and we highly recommend bringing a camera to capture the beauty of this spot.
The museum, with its narrow and sometimes uneven pathways, is best visited either early in the morning or at sunset, when the light enhances the already stunning views and the temperatures are more pleasant. Another advantage is that the museum has no admission charge, making it an accessible and enriching experience for all visitors.
In conclusion, our visit to the Agricultural Museum of Mykonos was a highlight of our trip. The combination of historical exhibits, the opportunity to explore a functioning windmill, and the panoramic views made it an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply someone who appreciates beautiful scenery, this museum is a must-visit when in...
