Bastion Bungalow is a must-visit for anyone interested in Kochi's rich history. This venerable building, originally built by the Dutch in 1667 on the foundations of a Portuguese fort, offers a unique glimpse into the city's colonial past. The bungalow itself is a beautiful example of Indo-European architecture, with a blend of Dutch and Keralan influences. The use of brick, laterite, and wood creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, while the long verandahs and geometrically patterned tiled roof add a touch of grandeur. Today, the bungalow houses the District Heritage Museum, which showcases artifacts, paintings, and exhibits that tell the story of Kochi's transformation from a small fishing village to a bustling port city. The museum does a fantastic job of bringing history to life, making it perfect for visitors of all ages. While the bungalow is currently the official residence of the Sub-Collector, the museum on the upper floor is open to the public. Even if you can't explore the entire building, the museum itself is worth a visit. Just be sure to check the opening hours before you go. Overall, Bastion Bungalow is a fascinating place that offers a window into Kochi's fascinating past. Highly recommended!

Tickets for 20₹ (Indian citizens) The sculptures lying outside in the garden can be accessed without any tickets Fort Kochi (Cochin) witnessed Kerala's colonial history for over four centuries, when it was conquered by successive European powers. Fort Kochi's Colonial history began with the Portuguese, who built Fort Manuel or Manuel Kotta in 1503 CE, the first European Fort established in India. It was square shaped with flanking bastions at the corners, with walls made of double rows of coconut tree stems securely fastened together and with earth rammed in between. A large moat was built around the fort. After 1663 CE, when the Dutch defeated the Portuguese, large sections of the fort were refortified over the years. The Stromberg Bastion of this Dutch fort was an ideal strategic location, which overlooked the Arabian Sea. The British demolished the fortification after they established their influence in the region in 1795 CE and later a Bungalow was built where the Stromberg Bastion existed originally. Used most recently as a residence, now Bastion Bungalow has been declared as a protected monument by the State Department of Archaeology and continues to be part of Fort Kochi's built heritage as a museum.

Bastion Bunglow is an example of Indo-European style architecture that one can see near Vasco da Gama square in Fort Kochi. This was the first place we visited as a part of our Eranankulam exploration trip. The building blends beautifully into the circular structure of the bastion, has a tiled roof and a typical first floor verandah in wood along its front portion. The Portuguese built Fort Immanuel during the early decades of the 16th century. When the Dutch captured Kochi in 1663, they started destroying the fort and reduced it to almost one third its size. Originally, the fort had seven bastions. Of these, the Stormberg bastion was later converted to the Bastion Bungalow. Once you are strong enough to walk, you can reach here from the Boat jetty by foot. The place is free cost to visit. The historical remaining of ancient history of Kerala was clearly preserved here. The authorities had arranged the whole thing in a well defined order. Once you are in Kochi, and if you are much interested in historical monuments, do visit this place at any cost.

Bastion Bunglow is an example of Indo-European style architecture that one can see near Vasco da Gama square in Fort Kochi. It was constructed by the Dutch on top of the northernmost bastian of the Cochin fort in the last quarter of the 17th century. Bastian Bungalow had been used as a residential building during the British period. Colonel Macaulay, the resident of Cochin during the early decade of the 19th century stayed in this building. The northern and western outer portion of the Bastian Bungalow looks exactly as a Bastion. The Bungalow on top of the Bastion is in European style with large rooms and high roof ceiling. Now this beautiful heritage building is a museum which beautifully displays 500 years history of fort Kochi. The pictures and maps can take you through the timeline. The kitchen is well preserved with funnel shaped chimney. The courtyard have many modern stone sculptures. You can see the fort Kochi beach from the top also. Entry fee is ₹20 per person.

The bunglow has been closed for several years now is what I hear. We went twice thinking it will be open but it wasn't and then we were informed that they don't open to public anymore. The bunglow is a big spacious building; must be hard to maintain. Anyway, its a nice view of the walkway and also there are some monuments in the garden with a few swings to enjoy while relaxing around. There is no fee but outside there are people charging for parking, even though you already pay for parking at the St. Francis church. I don't get it, why to pay parking fee everywhere we stop.
