Mahatma Gandhi beach, also known as Fort Kochi Beach, is a popular tourist destination located in the historic city of Kochi, in the southern Indian state of Kerala. The beach is known for its scenic beauty, stunning sunsets, and picturesque surroundings. One of the main attractions of the beach is the iconic Chinese fishing nets, which are a symbol of Kochi's rich maritime heritage. Visitors can watch the fishermen use these nets to catch fish, and even try their hand at it themselves. There are also several food stalls along the beach, offering fresh seafood and other local delicacies. The beach is also home to the famous Fort Kochi Beach Volleyball Championship, which is held annually and attracts players and spectators from all over the world. The championship is a great opportunity to witness some thrilling volleyball matches, and to experience the festive atmosphere of the beach. However, it is important to note that the beach can get quite crowded, especially during peak tourist season. The water can also be quite choppy, and swimming is not always recommended. Visitors should also be cautious of the strong currents, and take appropriate safety measures. Overall, Mahatma Gandhi beach is a must-visit destination for anyone travelling to Kochi. Its natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant atmosphere make it a truly unique and memorable experience. Whether you're a solo traveller, a family, or a group of friends, the beach offers something for everyone, and is sure to leave you with lasting memories of your...

This pillar on Fort Kochi beach was erected to commemorate the ‘Great Fire of Kochi’, which gutted a major part of British Kochi in 1889. British Port Officer J E Winckler took the initiative to erect the pillar in 1890. Historian K L Bernard has written about the Great Fire of Kochi in his book ‘Flashes of Kerala History’. The fire was spotted on 4th January 1889 in a ship named Chandrabhanu, which was anchored near Calvetti. The fire spread from there and went on for more than a week. Records say that about 300 houses were destroyed in the fire. This pillar itself is of historical relevance. Originally this pillar was part of Santa Cruz Basilica built by the Portuguese at Fort Kochi, which was used as a warehouse for arms by the Dutch after the defeat of the Portuguese in 1663. Later, in the 18th century, Kochi was attacked by the British and a part of Santa Cruz Basilica was destroyed. A pillar from this destroyed the Basilica was eventually erected on the beach on 17th October, 1890 by the British port officer J.E. Winckler to commemorate the Great...

The Mahatma Gandhi Beach & Park is a very interesting place, which combines a beach and a well-maintained park, where tourists can sit and relax while enjoying the natural beauty surrounding the place. This place is situated at Kochupilamoodu, which is just 2 km away from the Kollam town and was inaugurated in 1961. The park area is suitable for long walks along the shoreline and to witness the beauty of Arabian Sea, which looks most appealing during dusk.

HIGHLIGHTS

Mahatma Gandhi Beach & Park is a fascinating place, which attracts many local and International tourists. The sea here is safe for swimming and bathing, and the tourists feel extremely rejuvenated in the divine surroundings of this park. Though, not like Goa, but here are a few beach shacks nearby the park, that serve delicious sea food and other local food items along with drinks. Reaching this place is quite easy, as the Kollam district is well connected to Indian railway and the International Airport, which is located at Thiruvananthapuram, capital of...

For Kochinites it's not just a beach it's an emotion. But nowadays the beach is not maintained well and in a pathetic condition. The authorities should look into it and could take necessary steps to make the beach beautiful and attractive to tourists. During winter the waves will touch almost close to the land nearby. Also some areas of the beach we get bad smells. Chairs are not properly maintained they could arrange for some security staff to make sure people are following the rules correctly. Apart from that the beach is a major attraction for those who are visiting Kerala. There are lots of beautiful locations that are near the beach . The old buildings, British colonial things etc still have their own charm. If authorities consider this to maintain there is a huge chance to develop tourism in kochi.

Visited here in March, 2018. This was my second time to visit India, and chose the south part of India rather than the north part I had visited before. From what I had heard, tourists like coming to Kochi mainly for the back water tour. Certainly it is your duty, and also I wanna personally recommend walking along the coast of Arabian Sea, feeling the beach wind and wave sounds. Unlike other busy cities like Delhi or Varanasi, Kochi is pretty calm, and a great destination where you can be in the nature. Around this beach, you have lots of things to do: Seeing the traditional way of fishing by a unique net, Learning and feeling the history related to Portugal, Having glorious view of the sunset over the Arabian Sea, Enjoying street foods in the exotic but peaceful atmosphere, and lots of other stuff.

Mahatma Gandhi Beach in Fort Kochi is a wonderful destination for those seeking peace and natural beauty. The beach offers a calm and relaxing atmosphere, perfect for evening strolls or spending quality time with loved ones. The iconic Chinese fishing nets along the shore add a unique charm, making it a great spot for photography enthusiasts. The sunset views here are truly mesmerizing, creating a picturesque backdrop against the Arabian Sea. While the beach isn’t ideal for swimming due to strong currents, it’s perfect for soaking in the coastal breeze and exploring nearby attractions like the Fort Kochi promenade and local cafes. Overall, Mahatma Gandhi Beach is a must-visit spot for anyone exploring Fort Kochi, offering a blend of history, culture, and scenic beauty...
