Had no idea what to expect but we wanted to experience some traditional Balinese culture, and boy we did! We had booked tickets in advance, but this wasn't required as many people were selling them leading up to entrance of the temple. You can also buy tickets at the door. We were told to arrive in good time as seats are first come first served and silly us actually turned up an hour before. This was good as we had excellent seats, but they are extremely uncomfortable benches, and as the performance is 60-90 minutes, it wasn't pleasant.
The performance itself was something else. The choir were astonishing, and I'm still confused as to how they could fit so many men into such as small space. The costumes were epic, and it did build a great atmosphere. I would say, however, that even though we read the sypnosis that went with our tickets, we still had no idea what was going on most of the time, but it was still enjoyable.
The fire dance was a little different. Though safety precautions were made, the gentleman kicked a flaming coconut shell straight over the barrier into the crowd. Luckily it went towards the adults and I don't believe anyone was hurt, but it was still a bit scary.
I think the overall performance was great and I would definitely recommend going to experience it, however, be prepared to be a bit uncomfortable if you want seats close up. Though I actually think that the raised seats at the back would have had a better view...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of experiencing the Kecak dance in Bali, and it was absolutely mesmerizing! The performance took place in a stunning open-air venue, surrounded by traditional Balinese architecture that added to the cultural ambiance of the evening.
The Kecak dance, known for its hypnotic chant and rhythmic clapping, was performed by a large group of talented dancers who created an intense and captivating atmosphere. The storyline, which is rooted in the epic tale of the Ramayana, was beautifully portrayed through expressive movements and intricate costumes. The dancers, with their precise and dramatic gestures, brought the characters to life in a way that was both enchanting and emotionally engaging.
What truly stood out was the synchronization and energy of the performers. The combination of the haunting "cak-cak-cak" chant, the flickering flames, and the dramatic choreography created an almost trance-like experience that drew everyone in. The performance was further enhanced by the beautiful night setting, which added a magical glow to the entire event.
Overall, attending the Kecak dance was an unforgettable experience that offered a deep dive into Balinese culture. It's a must-see for anyone visiting Bali who wants to witness the rich traditions and artistry of the island. Highly...
Read moreFirst time to Kecak Fire and Trance dance. Got the tickets from a local tour operator, although asked for the nextdoor, looks like she sells for Pura Dalem Taman Kaja. As walking towards Ubud Place later realized there are several persons selling for different venues. Not sure performances at different venues vary a lot. Performance lasted only 1hour not 1.5hrs as told. It was based on Ramayana focused on the part of Ravana’s abduction of Sita and war between Ravana and Rama’s team Hanuman/Sugriva to bring back Sita home. Viewers may be at loss if they don’t know the story to appreciate. Might be a good idea if they provide brief summary in English. Performers did a great job.
Free seating, staff were very welcoming. They were kind enough to refunded no show ticket. Rained just before the start time luckily stopped just in time. Show started on time. Front row seats taken by 7pm. One must go early. Looks like tickets are still sold before the performance. May be recommended during...
