As we came down the steps from the church I saw a sign for a monastery bakery which I remembered reading about on Trip Advisor. We obviously headed straight there and decided to do the rooftop tour of the Monastery of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, a bargain at €8 each. We climbed the steps and made our way through several faded and run down corridors before climbing a final set of stairs the led past the roof of the dome and outside. We were overlooking the fountain of Pretoria and took a few pics there while deep breathing to avoid hurling a tour group that kept stopping in them middle of the route and yakking to their watery doom below. We descended the stairs and went through more dilpadated rooms (maybe they should have mugged those beggars!) before reaching the sanctuary of the bakery. I have pretty pathetic willpower when it comes to cakes so I succumbed to another cannolo although I didn't really want it, washed down by the smallest coffee ever. I did think €1 was cheap for a coffee and now I can see why! The bakery part was packed so as soon as I'd finished stuffing my face we left and...

An absolute treasure of history, art, and spirituality! Chiesa e Monastero di Santa Caterina d'Alessandria is a breathtaking sanctuary that seamlessly blends stunning architecture with a profound sense of serenity. Walking through its historic corridors and admiring the intricate details of its artwork is a truly unforgettable experience.

The church itself is a masterpiece, with awe-inspiring frescoes, ornate decorations, and an atmosphere that transports you to another era. The monastery, steeped in centuries of tradition, offers a peaceful retreat where history whispers from every corner. Whether you're admiring the craftsmanship, soaking in the tranquility, or reflecting on its rich heritage, this place is a must-visit.

A true gem that deserves to be experienced by anyone with an appreciation for art, culture, and history. I would return in...
