Rokuban-yagura Turret — Attraction in Osaka

重要文化財じゅうようぶんかざい　六番櫓ろくばんやぐら

二の丸南側の石垣上には、2層2階でほぼ同規模の隅櫓【すみやぐら】が、東から西へ一番から七番まで建っていた。この櫓は東から六番目であることから「六番櫓」という。外側にあたる南面と西面に石落としを1カ所ずつ設け、窓は外側を中心に26、鉄砲や矢を放つための狭間【さま】を多数あけられ、外敵に備えた堅固なつくりをなしている。創建は徳川幕府による大坂城再築工事の最終段階にあたる寛永5年（1628）で、上層の破風【はふ】を飾る東西の懸魚【げぎょ】のうち、西側の懸魚の裏側に「寛永五暦辰拾月吉日」と書かれている。面積は1階が約224.16平方メートル、2階が約133.43平方メートル、高さは約15.4メートルある。

The Rokuban-yagura Turret comes sixth when counted from the east, which accounts for the name rokuban, meaning sixth. With a device to drop stones to repel enemies climbing the stone wall, as well as a number of windows, this turret was highly resistant to enemy attacks.
