Terrible services by central gate JR staff. Arrived on 0750 @4th Aug and wanted to exit to JR East counter outside to redeem (reserved seats) for my return Narita Xpress tickets. Both ladies on counter repeatedly refused to let me pass over outside and insisted I use the ticketing machine at lane 13. The machine not user friendly to foreigners and I went over telling them 3 times. This going on for 30 minutes until I showed them the screen pictures of the machine notice. ''Your order cannot be handled. Please to manned counter''. I get it JP overwhelmed with tourist now but don't expect foreigner to know how the ticketing machines works. Just let me pass over to manned counter outside central gate would had solved it easily.

Shinagawa is clearly one of the larger stations in Tokyo, but at least its JR part is still quite manageable thanks to clear signs. Just be careful to not confuse the platforms 1 and 3 for Yamanote Line, which are located pretty far from each other, so it you're like me, you may have to walk up a few extra stairs to get where you actually want to go. The station is, despite being very busy pretty much all time, kept in a very clean state, and it offers a few places to grab a quite bite or something to drink in the summer heat.
