This is a top quality art gallery. And best of all it's not too busy. Japanese people are so full of respect for human endeavour, and the way they line up politely to look at each work of art in turn is wonderful. Especially for the leisure bound Westerner, viewing masterpieces shipped in from Paris at his own lackadaisical pace. So well laid out. So quiet. And not just the two or three major works from the advertised artist, and the rest from his or her off sider, such as they often do at the NSW gallery. No, this seasons exhibition from the Musee d'l'orangerie features a veritable bounty of master works by Cezanne, Renoir, Sisley and continues on, unabashed. Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani, all the big names and none of the small ones. The gallery features a large number of works in the permanent collection documenting the fascinating history of the port of Yokohama. There's even a Dali sculpture, a rare sight this far from Spain. Strong WiFi. Wish I knew what a Yokohama cappuccino was. I think it's a flat white with saffron...
Read moreFor anyone who wants to look at traditional art: Don't visit a contemporary art museum. You're bound to be disappointed.
I visited the museum during the Yokohama Trienale 2024 and it was INCREDIBLE. The exhibition was extremely well curated, put together and included the work of many wonderful artists from all over the world. I couldn't have wished for anything more. I will never forget this day well spent and will definitely return on my next trip to Japan! I see that some reviews are critical of what was displayed while I think it was exactly the choice in displays that i loved so much. It was socially aware, brought up contemporary issues such as police brutality and did it in such a smart way.. as an example, videos of police brutality were present in almost every room, making you less and less likely to watch it as you walked through the exhibition - as an analogy to the real world where people look away because they've "seen it so many...
Read moreBE CAREFUL. If you want to go, even if google says they are open, even if their website says they are open...They might not be. I went recently and I checked both google and their website before coming. Both said it was open. Arrived and everything was closed except for gallery 9: which consisted of some 3 sub-par glass statues, and 2 paintings. It was TERRIBLE. It's a beautiful building, and I would have loved to actually been able to go in, but they were setting up for an exhibition.....the kicker: they closed all the other galleries....FOR A MONTH. The entire month of June, everything was closed except Gallery 9. Gallery 9 is about 5 meters by 5 meters (if that). If you are going to close the entire museum to set up for something, I get it. But say so on your...
