If you're visiting Penang for the very first time don't miss out on Chowrasta Market, located right in the heart of Georgetown, Penang.
Though not a famous tourist spot but it will enriched you with knowledge of our local heritage.
Many articles has been written about this must-visit destination, to experince it all you have to do is to visit it and capture the vibrant feelings of the local culture. You won't experience the yester years feel but will definitely have a glimpse of the uniqueness market atmosphere in a bustling mix of traditional wet market culture nearly as intact like before.
Situated along busy Penang Road which is reasonably accessible. Once you're in Chowrasta, you'll immediately feel the lively atmosphere the older generation used to enjoy. The market is housed in a colonial-era building, giving it a nostalgic charm that adds to its character.
Chowrasta is basically a wet market known for its wide selection of fresh greenery and meats. The vendors are indeed friendly, and trust me that they take pride in their trade. It’s a great place to find what you want.
Local hawker food used to be the highlights of Chowrasta Market but was revamped several years ago into the present design. The previous section has been phased out replaced with several stalls selling local dried food stuffs. Not long ago, it was famous being a place to sample home cook hawker stalls food, where you can enjoy famous local street food like Char Kway Teow, Penang Laksa and several local varieties. It was then renowned as the region's rich culinary heritage.
Besides food, you can enjoy a little shopping experince in numerous stalls selling local handicrafts, souvenirs, clothing, and other everyday goods . Chowrasta Market is generally clean but gets crowded over weekends and festive celebrations. The market place enjoys an old-school feel, so come prepared for a slightly rustic environment, with narrow aisles and bustling crowds. Parking is limited and scare, but plenty of options around the area. Chowrasta is easily accessible by public transport, if you don't drive it's not a problem.
Come early because the place dies down by noon. I hope with this review you can capture the essence of Market Place at its tradition atmosphere.
