Most of the places here are shut, you'd think that most of the business is abandoned except for the wet market downstairs. If you're trying to see any interesting seafood you might be let down, as it's mainly just fish and prawns. Smells like it too. Actually came here to check out the secondhand bookshop upstairs which was surprisingly easy to find, as it was one of the few places open in that level. You could say the books are alright but somehow overpriced. I think it's those Singaporean tourists with absurd amounts of money that keep propping the prices up. It is also a good place to buy your Penang souvenirs for cheaper, including the must-buy little balls of tau sar piah. Just polish up on your Cantonese, because the auntie will speak it to you, and will shake her head in disappointment if you can't speak it. You'll make her ancestors cry.

Went to Chowrasta Market early in the morning. Busy place, crowded and lively. The morning sun very bright, remember to wear your sunglasses so you can see better. The market offered almost everything from fresh produced such as, meat, seafood, vegetable, to all types of spices for cooking. Also sell preserved food and dry snacks, clothing, inner wear, socks. The market include a small hawker space that served the famous penang street food, fried carrot cake, hand made chee cheong fun, kway teow noodle soup and coffee, tea and etc. Walk further down, you will see a coffee shop also equally crowded that served char kway teow, asam laksa and curry mee. You are spoilt for choice for breakfast! Come and soak up the vibe and energy of this little penang street named Chowrasta.

This is a go-to place for local & visitors in the morning. Typical wet market offerings plus potpourri of traditional local traders and businesses operating within and the surrounding area make this place a delightful visit & worthy visit. Most of the activities (apart from the permanent shop/ stalls) happen in the early morning till noon; one can find most of the raw ingredients, edibles plus surprises could be found; the new multi storey car park building is now ready for those self drive, local bus stops available right at the door step that ready to pick you up to the many parts of Penang/ tourist spots once you done with the market activities and savoring the local hawker food.

Quaint & charming, this market exudes personality. From pickled & preserved fruit tidbits & great local food options to inexpensive clothing @ super prices. My favourite experiences are with this clothing shop on the 2nd floor of the market (unit 38) where the owner, David (1st pic), his wife & MiL run 2 units selling a plethora of leisure & footwear. Another is just along the periphery of the market, selling local candied snacks & popiah skin. Jerome (2nd pic) & his family have been hand making these products for over 70 years under the "Uncle Lim" moniker. Great products. Fantastic people. Priceless experience. Make sure to visit them on the beautiful pearl of the orient!

One of coffee house in Chowrasta. Open in the morning, and close before noon. RM 1.8 for a cup of hot coffee. In Penang, coffee consists of sweet creamer and black coffee, ask for coffee O if u prefer coffee only (or with sugar) Near the left entrance, there is a chestnut stall. RM5 for the smallest pack of chestnut. Tried chestnut for the first time here, it tasted SO GOOD! U can buy all local products such as local food and drink, sweet, nutmeg juice base, penang coffee. The sellers are so friendly, if u buy a lot, they will give u discount. They sell tshirt too, around RM25 for a tshirt with Penang-related illustrations. U can get less if u bargain.
