The Aotea Centre, in the heart of central Auckland, is an impeccable cultural space — bright and full of life. The story of its design and how it has changed over time is very interesting. It has a beautiful and impressive main auditorium with space for more than 2,000 people. The giant screens showing Māori art are amazing, and the building’s art collection is also great — with sculptures, paintings, and a large tapestry.

It is inclusive and accessible, with signs in both English and te reo Māori, and also braille. There are many clean bathrooms on all levels. They are always tidy and in perfect condition.

The centre hosts many kinds of events — from opera and rock concerts to conferences and comedy shows, and also family or corporate events in its different rooms. It has wide, bright halls and several bars.

A special mention for the Terrace Café, a lovely place to enjoy a drink before a show. I believe it should also be open on non-show days, as it's a unique and beautiful spot right in front of the square. There are also smaller and flexible rooms, perfect for meetings or conventions.

You can also find special design elements all over the building. The lamps are design pieces, and the lobby carpet is a special creation with references to New Zealand’s nature.

And finally, all the staff working in the building are truly excellent people. Friendly, kind, and...

18/12/24. Our daughter recently did 7 performances at Aotea Centre as part of National Youth Theatre. The seats are comfortable enough and view from most seats is pretty good. However, the terms and conditions state you may not take large bags and umbrellas into the theatre. We saw people with both, including 2 or 3 huge umbrellas that should have been checked in. The ushers should be on to this. They should also be on to disturbances in theatre such as constant chattering, as occured across the aisle from us and nearly resulted in a fight between patrons. Most are young and seem unwilling to step in. Parking is easy at Civic, especially if you use parking app which is cheaper and saves time waiting to pay at end. Does fill up very quickly though. Undercover walkway is great in...

Aotea Centre is a fantastic venue in the heart of Auckland! 🎭 The architecture is modern and well-designed, making it a great place for concerts, theatre performances, and events. The seating is comfortable, with excellent views from most angles, and the acoustics are top-notch.

The staff are friendly and efficient, ensuring a smooth experience from entry to exit. The location is super convenient, with plenty of nearby restaurants and bars for a pre-show meal or post-event drink. Parking can be a bit tricky during busy events, so arriving early or using public transport is a good idea.

Overall, a must-visit venue for arts and...

A bit confusing with the multiple levels and different letters of entrances that correspond with your ticket. Very beautiful stage and the seats were nice and comfortable. I enjoyed the performance (Giselle) very much. Not sure if it's the case with all performances or just this one but when they sell the programmes in the beginning there are staff with stalls in all levels but they only accept cash. If you don't carry cash with you, you have to go all the way to the bottom :) I ended up forgetting my phone on my seat and the staff helped me quickly and were incredibly nice about it too! (Thank you so much again!!!)

This is a modern theatre, well furnished to a very high standard, with good facilities and friendly staff. A number of plays are staged here every week. There is a parking lot downstairs, which is very convenient, but the parking fee is slightly expensive.
