As many other reviews, which sadly I saw only after visiting the museum :(. I was expecting a completely different experience and was really bothered by the "proud" display of skinned animals and the horrible pictures of the hunters standing over a dead bleeding polar bear or the demo of a hunter hitting a seal in the head with a huge hammer to kill it. I understand it's part of the culture and history, but that was just horrific. I am so glad my kids didn't join me, or I would have asked for the money back and left. Definitely could be more humane presentation and a warning as to the graphic pictures should be noted in advance. The story about the expedition people killing the weaker dogs and feeding them to the other dogs and eventually killing a 28 dogs who came out on the expedition was just so cruel and cold. It would have never been my choice to visit such a place had I known. I absolutely don't recommend it.

It's a very good museum that is quite quick to do and covers the Arctic culture in its entirety (way of life, fauna and flora, hunting and fishing tools...) the advice I can give you is to remember to bring a student card (if you are a student) as there is a reduced rate. Don't forget to ask the hostess/hostess at the entrance to give you a booklet (there are in English, German and French) which explains the different parts of the museum in detail, it's very interesting to understand each piece, work or setting. Count on about 1h30 for the visit in order to see each part well. Concerning the parking, I recommend you to park in a big parking place not far from the museum, just on the street behind, it's not free but it's allowed and it will cost you about 2€20 The souvenir shop in the museum is a bit expensive, others in town are much cheaper I think

I was pretty disappointed by this museum. In fairness, I'm not a big fan of museums, but this one was pretty bad. We decided to come because it didn't cost very much and it seemed like it could be interesting. It started off by us buying our tickets and then the lady telling us that nothing was in English after we bought the tickets. They had a small pamphlet for us to read, but it was disjointed and didn't explain all of the exhibits. The museum was very small. There was a little bit of history that was interesting to learn about, but for the most part, it was pretty boring. None of the exhibits were interactive. It was just a lot of stuffed animals. I don't think this is worth a stop while in Tromso. There are better ways to spend your time while in the city.

The entrance fee for an adult is 100 NOK or roughly £7.50/$9.50 at the time of writing this review. You will be handed a paper guidebook in English, other languages are available but limited. The guide takes you through the exhibition and identifies room numbering to keep you in track. It's not the most user friendly but does the job. The museum itself describes hunting, trapping and exploration of the arctic in the 19th century. It's a good way to immerse in the culture and gives a window to the struggles living in the arctic during those times. For those strongly against animal cruelty or have a dislike for reading long texts like my review. I'd suggest to steer away. Otherwise it's worth a visit if you have time to spare during your stay at Tromsø
