I don’t enjoy writing bad reviews, but when everything goes wrong you’ve got to wonder if it’s some kind of performance art. This restaurant really needs to organize its staff.
When we arrived, a waitress told us to sit at the tables at the end of the street and disappeared back into the restaurant. The only free tables were placed right up against other diners' ones and covered in their things. We felt awkward about asking them to move their things and moving the tables ourselves (we didn't really feel in the position to play table Tetris). A kind couple quickly freed up their table for us. Not a big issue, but it set the tone for the evening.
Finally seated, we got cozy with the 4-5 dirty glasses left by previous guests, which sat on our table for a solid 20 to 30 minutes, despite waitresses walking by. Again, not a big issue.
While time was passing, another customer, tired of waiting, left. The waitress, bringing her order, handed the plate to our neighbor, who had offered to take it, only to snatch it back without explanation. At this point, the waitress turned to our neighbors and asked them what they wanted to order. They kindly pointed out that maybe we’d like to order as well. Again, not this huge issue... but at that point we had probably been waiting for 40 minutes.
After a long waiting time, the waitress finally came to take our orders. But 20 minutes later, she returned asking what we had wanted again—was our order lost?
When drinks arrived, instead of red wine, we got sangria and glasses filled with ice. When the correct bottle finally came, the wine tasted corked.
Samosas came in the wrong quantity, and the waitress couldn’t tell which were vegetarian. Then came the vegetarian dish—with pieces of meat inside (as we wouldn't notice). Now, I don’t like to nitpick or make things difficult by ordering vegetarian food, especially when it's clearly listed on the menu: choosing to eat vegetarian is an ethical decision that can carry significant weight for those who follow it, so serving a dish that contains meat while presenting it as vegetarian is far from appropriate.
Then, when our dishes finally arrived, we still had no cutlery. We asked for it, were assured it was on the way, but it never came. Our table neighbor ended up retrieving it for everyone, while the waitresses seemed blissfully unaware that the table hadn’t even been set.
Through all this, the waitresses barely spoke to us. Only at the end, one cheerfully asked if everything had been fine. Communication earlier on could have avoided some of...
Read moreSadly a big disappointment if i could give it 0 stars i would. This place gave my girlfriend food poisoning. We first got introduced to this restaurant through several recommendations of YouTubers such as Nark Wiens. Im sure that this place used to be good once but it for sure is not anymore. Supposedly its a Mozambican restaurant but nothing there resembled food from Mozambique. Not the food nor the staff.
Lets start with the service: The waiter was unfriendly and was extremely uninterested in us and our order. The interesting part is that my girlfriend is from Nigeria( so also from the African continent) but we were the only table thats was being treated poorly. He was being very friendly to other customers and that just left another bad taste on this whole experience.
Lets talk about the location: So the location of the restaurant is actually pretty nice. It’s in between tiny streets and staircases making it a very picturesque spot. But thats also the only good thing i can say about this place. The hygiene was abysmal. The table we sat was sticky the menus looked absolutely filthy and at one point a cockroach 🪳 was right next to us on a wall. And cockroaches are never a good sign. At that point we were already sure that something is really off about this place.
Now lets talk about the worst part, the food: We had the Samosas( which were ok) and the plantain( which were unseasoned and served with a sauce that tasted like a mix of ketchup and mayonnaise). After that we got the Wuca Pasta( a white sauce with chicken and penne) and the Massamba ( which was a supposedly “mozambican” stew with okra and other vegetables and rice but tasted more like unseasoned Indian veggie curry). The main dishes were absolutely horrible, unseasoned, plain and just all in all not good. And the worst part is that after my girlfriend and I arrived home she had to vomit three times because of this food.
If you want to experience food poisoning, fake “african” food and absolutely disgusting hygiene then this is the place for you. It’s truly terrible to eat there. If you want to experience authentic Mozambican Cuisine there are other restaurants that...
Read more(November 2023) It was a rainy evening, our last meal before we take the long trek back to Cali. Boo hoo! Well this one was worth the climax in culinary cuisine. Not exactly the type of place you would think would require a reservation. But our hotel front desk guy who called many other African places listed on Yelp found they were all closed... permanently! (BTW yelp is not used as much as Google). But fortunately he recommended this spot and made us a reservation. Inside isn't big but, pictures show folks eating outside up the street. The food… This was slap my African 12th great great grandma good. I've been on the west coast too long!!!
As a former Portuguese colony, the mash up of colonial influence and traditional African cooking blends so prominently and proudly here. I can't wait to try more! The lamb was off the Chain with coriander, curry, black pepper, cinnamon lord knows what else added to the fall of the bone slow cooked entree enough to feed 2 -3 mortals. I ate the whole dam thing! The spicy wings were THE best l've ever eaten. I like flats not drumettes which only one was. I also like em extra crispy so the outside is crunchy to the bone and marrow which dissolve in your mouth as you suck on them. ( oh yeah totally suckable wings is a good thing) with the meat not mushy but fall of the bone firm and full of flavor. The spices were reminiscent of spicy Korean and jerk flavor.
So as an end point many folks think Portuguese food is bland lacking depth and spice. Certainly I added spicy hot source or piri pire pretty much for every meal here. I ordered the large beer somewhat regretful because if never finish one. I needed it here! While they certainly offered spicy piri piri, there was enough flavor in the lamb and in the wings all by themselves. I didn't touch it. I wouldn't call Portuguese food bland... rather simple... the seafood certainly shines all by itself crazy fresh lonesome with simple butter or olive oil garlic salt and lemon. All you need But if you like spicy you will definitely want to check this spot out!!! So we finished our Portuguese trip with Portuguese food... kicked up a...
