Considered Lisbon's most picturesque funicular, leading up to the Bairro Alto and Bica neighbourhoods. Classical Lisbon tourist attraction. The Bica Funicular, sometimes known as the Elevador da Bica, is a funicular railway line in the civil parish of Misericórdia, in the municipality of Lisbon, Portugal. It connects the Rua de São Paulo with Calçada do Combro/Rua do Loreto, operated by Carris. Built in 1892, the funicular was initially moved by the water counterbalancing system, whereby movement was achieved by loading the car at the top of the hill with water until it was heavy enough to descend the hill and pull up the other car at the bottom of the hill. Then, in 1896 the Ascensor da Bica became steam powered, and in 1924 it was electrified. Timetable: every 15 minutes (approx.) 7am – 9pm Monday to Saturday, 9am – 9pm Sunday and public holidays Tickets to ride the Bica funicular can be bought onboard, from the driver. They’re €3.80, and allow two trips -- up the hill and back down, or down and then back up, on the same day. Those who purchased the 24-hour public transportation card can ride it for free. That’s the “Viva Viagem” card that’s purchased at the metro stations for €6.45.

This is going to be a detailed one ROOMS: pretty good, clean and tidy, but the mattress on the room we stayed in were uncomfortable. Since we were 3, the single bed was not a bed, not comfortable. But tbf that is the only downside of the room. Service: the rooms get cleaned everyday, and towels changed, we didn’t meet anyone as we didn’t have any problems with our stay check in: the worst experience possible, and started before we arrive because reading the reviews I knew it was going to be complicated, I tried to contact them and failed, lucky for us I read a review that had the instructions points for that. Basically you have to go the entrance, ring the bell and wait to be let inside, once inside you are going to see a machine and then do your checkin. The problem is the booking reservation number is not going to be the one to do your checkin and you have to call a number which is pretty inconvenient. Please be better at the checkin. Location: pretty good, close to a lot of bars, restaurants, plenty of places to go for breakfast nearby, I recommend Baobá, the pizza +39 is pretty good as well

Why do people love this so much?! I can see why locals here can't stand tourists. This is just one of many overrun funiculars that is almost impossible to use in a practical way, like if you legitimately just need to get up the hill in a timely manner. Firstly, they are really expensive. Secondly, you have to wait like an hour, depending on the time of day/night. It'll be packed with tourists, all hanging out with their phones, cameras, and ipads(!!) in their hands. Thirdly, the actual ride is really short but they spend so much time at either end that it seems disorganized and slow. Don't waste your time. It's not that fun. In fact, it's not fun AT ALL. Definitely not worth the €3.70(!) but I guess they need to charge that much to dissuade tourists. Sucks for the locals. It can be nice to photograph if you're NOT on the tram so my advice is to skip the ride and just walk if all you want are cool holiday photos.

Location and the apartment is perfect. Nothing else to say more. HOWEVER... They have not send the check in details (booked via Booking.com). I had to call them a few times (international calls!). They still did not give enough details to get in the building. Somehow i managed to get in from the door at the backside. But I needed to go downstairs to the ground zero floor. Elevators does not work! Stairs are closed! They told me to find the lower level entrance. There is a cafe there. Please see the hidden treasury(!) door just next to the Cafe's entrance (I play a lot of PS games but couldn't find it untill another helpfull lady from the facility helped me). Therefore I wanted to add the photo to help other miserable guests. Starting with bad check in experience, the apartment is really awesome. I hope they consider my thoughts on checking in and sending details to the guests.

Elevador da Bica in Lisbon is a charming piece of the city's urban fabric. This historic funicular, with its iconic yellow trams, winds its way through narrow streets and steep inclines, offering a unique perspective of Lisbon's hilly landscape. As you ride, you're treated to a glimpse of local life and the character of the neighborhood. The rattling of the tram, the cobblestone streets, and the colorful facades create an authentic atmosphere that feels like stepping into a postcard. While it's a short journey, Elevador da Bica encapsulates Lisbon's soul, effortlessly blending tradition and modernity in a way that makes you part of the vibrant tapestry of the city

Riding the Elevador da Bica is like stepping back in time while still feeling the heartbeat of modern Lisbon. This iconic yellow funicular not only tackles one of the city's steepest hills, but it also provides a momentary glimpse into the daily lives of locals. As you ascend, the narrow, graffiti-covered streets unfold below you, a mix of historic charm and urban grit. It's not just a convenient way to scale the hill between Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré; it's a brief but unforgettable journey that's as photogenic as it is functional. Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned visitor, the Elevador da Bica is a must-experience slice of Lisbon's unique character.
