I had the privilege of visiting Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião, and I was utterly mesmerized! The church's stunning architecture, rich history, and serene ambiance left me in awe. Si tratta, come suggerisce la denominazione, della chiesa madre ⛪ di Ponta Delgada, capoluogo della Regione Autonoma delle Azzorre. Fu costruita 🏗 tra il 1531 e il 1547, sulla base di un preesistente eremo intitolato a San Sebastiano. Esternamente si possono notare pregevoli portali manuelini e barocchi; a dominare poi, come di consueto per le chiese dell'isola di São Miguel, è il combinato cromatico di bianco ⚪ e nero ⚫. L’interno, articolato in tre navate, può vantare la presenza di sculture lignee di cedro e altri legni rari, come il pau-santo. Meritano senz'altro una menzione pure le immagini del XVII e XVIII secolo, i pannelli di azulejos, gli arredi della sacrestia in jacaranda del XVII secolo e la ricca collezione di paramenti ricamati in oro su arazzo, risalenti al XVI secolo. Una targa in metallo, affissa alla parete, ricorda la visita pastorale di Papa Giovanni Paolo II del maggio 1991: "HOMENAGEM A SUA SANTIDADE O PAPA JOÃO PAULO II • RECORDANDO A SUA VISITA PASTORAL A ESTA ILHA DE S.MIGUEL - 11 de Maio de 1991". Per il resto, da segnalare le panche e il soffitto in legno scuro, un modesto organo nella loggia sopra l'ingresso principale e alcune cappelle laterali riccamente decorate. La nostra visita si è svolta nel corso della prima giornata "esplorativa" in città, se così si può dire. Giunti in loco sulle 13.30 🕜 dopo aver fatto tappa al monumento di Gonçalo Velho Cabral e alle Portas da Cidade, ne abbiamo approfittato per scattare subito qualche foto 📸 della facciata, entrando poi per vedere gli spazi interni. Nei giorni successivi ci siamo passati davanti in altre occasioni, apprezzandola soprattutto la sera ✨ in virtù di una suggestiva illuminazione. Purtroppo, un po' come per le sopraccitate attrazioni, non sono presenti pannelli didascalici 🪧 a beneficio del visitatore; in relazione a ciò, credo proprio che qualcosa in più si potrebbe anche fare. Ad ogni modo, visita senz'altro CONSIGLIATA 👍.
