Excellent place. Avoid looking too long at the wallpapers with r*pe scenes of young women (too erotized) on the wall leading through the toilets ; it makes you very uncomfortable. 🤢 Unfortunately, the explanation for this art (not standing there by a chance) is written in small on a door and not really understandable easely historically (for whom is not familiar with the Balkans' history.)
ANYWAY ; this museum is very good. It gives you a look on the last century's slovenian paintings. History is dark, as the paintings. You can feel this energy through the art. You have a sight on the various arts and trends appering in this not so much known country. Some Installations and sculptures too.
The very contemporary part (2021-2024) shows today's Slovenia in some contemplative videos, other colorful creations, and puts a light too on the difficult and very sad aspect of Immigration in Europe today. This last room was touching, the artists did a very good work (thank you) showing this reality at its right place.
The current exhibition downstairs was about Palestine in 2017, a little immersive point of view from a rare tourist 7 years ago, filled with current important books about the israelio-palestian conflict ; something you must see nowadays, knowing the huge violence going on there right now. Palestinian culture is even unknow from European people, and this exhibition gives you a litlle glimpse of her beauty.
To end, the bookstore 🎨📚📜offers a VERY GOOD choice of books, art books, political books, even comics (omg) and photography books. Even though the bookstore doesn't look that big, the choice in it is made from conscious minds and fine taste. Thanks for giving this opportunity to catch good things and contemporary art to "normal citizens". Love it. People working there did good work,...
Read moreAdvice for families: if you as a parent doesn’t feel confident to guide your family through modern art, professional guide is perfect solution. We had wonderful guide just for our family of four, Janja Zupančič, who presented masterpieces interestingly for our children (10 and 12 years) and for parents. She kept our ful attention with questions and small tasks for whole hour and explained modern art and its charms that we would never reveal on our own. We had also possibility to ask questions. The price for such experience is very modest-20 eur for a family. In the end, you should not miss lovely ambient of coffee shop where you can enjoy delicious coffee or tea, bananabread, cheesecake, brownie etc. Do not forget to book the guide at least 3-5 working...
Read moreThere are significantly better galleries. Many of the texts in the constant gallery are only in Slovenian and everything is scattered across the walls in a way which makes it hard to focus ,some rooms don’t tell you the name of the paintings. The art itself isn’t particularly interesting or inventive but that isn’t the fault of the museum. What is their fault is that all english texts ,if they exist ,are written in a very hard wording and are inaccessible to people whose first language isn’t English. It also was pretty tiny which isn’t an issue if you use the space well and make it interesting like for example in the moko gallery in Barcelona but the museum felt very scattered and not very well...
