This is Slovenia’s leading national institution for natural sciences, covering a wide range of fields including zoology, botany, mineralogy, paleontology, and fossils. Founded in 1821, in the same year as the National Museum, it is one of the oldest national museums in Slovenia. The current building, constructed in the late 19th century, is designed in the Neo-Renaissance style and is shared with the National Museum of Slovenia. One of the most popular exhibits is the complete skeleton of a Pleistocene mammoth, discovered in Slovenia. Also on display is the Leptodirus hochenwartii, the world’s first scientifically described cave-dwelling beetle, which has become a symbol of Slovenia’s cave biology research.

Very good Museum. Only 6 euros to enter. Museum is in a beautiful former palace.(For WW2 history buffs, 80 years ago during the German occupation of Ljubljana, the building was also used for administrative purposes by the German Wehrmacht and Waffen SS). The museum has a fairly Impressive WW1 and WW2 collection. Not only that, but has a full 20th century collection from Slovenia history. It’s very easy to navigate the museum and well worth checking out if you are interested in history.

Do not expect anything great or rarities that are not found elsewhere, but if you is predicting a small cozy museum, which is a tribute to science, then you have come to the right place. I had high expectations, but after seeing the museum was my disappointment turned into a happy smile, as this really is a beautiful little museum that does not pretend to be more than what it is - a tribute to science. A small minus is that much of the text is not in English, but if one has mastered his science, then this is no problem. Maybe you can get a translater at the entrance - I did not ask. I do not know if I would say it is family friendly - but if the kids like museums so it is a really nice little place to...
