I would have rated higher, but the biggest letdown was that I opted for the slightly more expensive 'superior' room, expecting a design with lots of natural light and small skylight-like windows, as showcased on Booking.com, but instead, I was given a standard-looking room that didn’t match the pictures on the website, leaving me wondering what the additional cost was for.

The room appeared clean at first glance, but closer inspection revealed areas that were overlooked. For instance, the space under the beds hadn’t been cleaned, and I found empty cocktail bottles left in the cupboards, which was disappointing.

While our stay was okay and filled the purpose, I felt the pride is a few hundred rand too much especially as there is no aircon in the rooms. I knew we were in trouble when the security guard checked us in at the front desk. Who decided to put us in a double room with only a shower and which was not yet ready and which faces busy Jan Smuts road. The cleaning staff where still busy walking around barefoot cleaning and changing sheets. So I spent the first 15 minutes there getting the room I had originally requested, which was ready the whole time.
