We have done 5 escape rooms at Maximum Escape in Barcelona and would definitely recommend them to others:
-Dungeon with Game Master (GM) Josep
Prisoners of Alkaban with GM Michele
-Ulysses Spaceship with GM Victoria
Sherlock Holmes vs. London Devil with GM Denisse
-Gangsters: Money, Guns and Whiskey with GM Fede
——
From Favorite to Least Favorite:
#1 - 5/5 - Gangsters: Fede is one of the best GMs I’ve ever experienced. He really gets into his role and it makes the whole experience that much better. I liked the puzzles and the storyline in the room made sense. Overall an amazing experience.
#2 - 5/5 - Dungeon: Josep is a new GM and did a fantastic job. The room had some great puzzles and was a lot of fun.
TIE #3/#4 - 4/5 - School of Magic with Michele - I loved the design of the room and we really enjoyed having Michele as a GM. I really liked some of the magical elements and in some ways, the puzzles in this room were my favorite of the 5. But there is, without giving too much a way, a narrow space that might not be passable for larger/bigger/fatter folks—and to bypass it, you miss out on a few stages of the game which is disappointing. Finally, the story isn’t quite clear enough at the end to feel like you achieved the objective and won. Instead, it sort of felt like we solved a puzzle and…oh, that’s the end of the game? Okay, cool.
TIE #3/#4 - 4/5 - Sherlock Holmes vs. London Devil. Denisse was a great GM and I loved the different puzzles in the room. The ambiance was really great and I loved the decorations. The puzzles toward beginning of the game are fantastic. Like the School of Magic, though, we sort of had to ask “can you explain the ending” because it felt like we just solved a random puzzle and the game was over. It wasn’t clear how what we were doing was contributing to the progression of the story per se. But I really liked a lot of the puzzles. (Recommendation for the team: without giving too much away, the phone’s volume is much too loud. People will naturally put it up to their ears and it definitely hurt them when I did so.)
#5 - 2.5/5 - Ulysses Spaceship. Definitely very, very good ambiance and decorations. It was really well designed, visually. Unfortunately, there weren’t a ton of puzzles—definitely this is more for folks wanting the adventure aspect over the escape room aspect. Less to be discovered and more things you’re sort of instructed to do. There’s also a narrow space in this room, that might not be suitable for larger/bigger/fatter folks. My teammate was pretty average sized and barely made it through. Luckily, unlike the School of Magic room, there was an alternative offered by the GM that did not take away from participating in the rest of the adventure. This room also had a few technical malfunctions that made completing some of the tasks more challenging. Definitely another one with an “Oh, it’s over. Okay.” kind of ending. The room isn’t bad, per se, just not as good as the others in...
Read moreWhile on holiday here, me and my group decided to try “The search for the snake stone”. The idea is great, it starts off amazingly, but the end was disappointing to say the least.
Most of the puzzles were fun and well thought out, but there was one that felt completely out of place. It was confusing and didn’t seem to make much sense, maybe it was a translation issue, or maybe my group just didn’t get it. Either way, it broke the flow.
A big highlight was the host who welcomed us at the beginning, he was fantastic! He really got into character and made the introduction super fun and immersive, which got us excited to start. Unfortunately, that energy didn’t carry through to the end. After nearly three hours of playing, we were met by a completely different person who seemed disconnected from the whole experience. That shift really killed the vibe.
To make things worse, we were given only two badges at the end, even though we paid for three players. It wasn’t a cheap activity, so that small detail felt surprisingly careless.
Honestly, it felt like a bit of a ripoff. Only one person in the group actually needed to interact with the main character of the story or be involved in key moments, while the others just watched. For a game that doesn't really require more than one or two active players, paying full price for each person seems unnecessary.
The ending of the game itself was also underwhelming. The final item we needed to find was described in a very confusing way, again, maybe a translation issue? It left us frustrated instead of feeling accomplished.
Overall, we had fun, but the experience didn’t live up to its full potential. With better consistency and attention to detail, it...
Read moreWe were in the Ulysses room today (16.07.2023).
There were two of us, and we had prior experience of more than 30 escape rooms in multiple countries.
Tl;dr the Ulysses is highly recommended.
It shouldn't be very difficult for any kind of players. Instead of having tons of puzzles it focuses more on experience and atmosphere of being on a spaceship and it's doing it really great. I felt my heart pumping at some moments. Kudos to the script authors - they were really inspired by System Schock and other sci-fi movies and games.
Note that you need a bit of agility for this room (a bit more than for the usual rooms). If you're good on that front it should be easy to finish this room in time.
Also note that sound could be a bit too loud at some moments, so be ready to communicate very loudly.
Also if you wear glasses it might be slightly uncomfortable for you in some moments. Use contacts for this game if you can.
P.S. also many thanks to our...
