Puerta de Alcala is a gateway landmark situated in the middle of the roundabout at the Calle de Acala and Calle de Alfonso XII junction at the northwest corner of Parque Del Retiro.

This important monument was part of Carlos III efforts to modernise and beautiful eastern Madrid when constructed (1769-1777). It has three center arches with two rectangular shaped openings at its ends.

Designed in Neo-classical style, the pediment is modestly decorated including sculpted young angels seated across the top. There are landscaped grass and flowerbeds on both sides of Puerta de Alcala, making this an attractive monument to photograph at this time of the year.

Unfortunately, there is much traffic on all sides of the monument. However, you can take pictures from across the street near the Parque Del Retiro entrance. If you are patient, you can occasionally snap unobstructed pictures in between passing vehicles.

🔹 Entrada gratuita y abierta las 24 horas Una de las grandes ventajas de la Puerta de Alcalá es que no hay que pagar entrada. Es un monumento al aire libre, por lo tanto, se puede visitar a cualquier hora del día, sin restricciones. Es ideal para turistas que no quieren gastar y buscan disfrutar de Madrid caminando.

🌞 Mi experiencia Yo la visité al mediodía, con 35 grados, y sinceramente el calor era muy intenso, casi insoportable. Tuve que irme pronto por el sol directo y el pavimento caliente. Si vas en verano, te recomiendo ir alrededor de las 20:00 hs, cuando baja el sol y el ambiente es mucho más agradable. A esa hora, además, la luz dorada le da un toque mágico para las fotos.

👥 ¿Hay fila? Cuando fui había una fila breve para tomarse fotos justo enfrente, pero avanzaba muy rápido. La mayoría de la gente es respetuosa y espera su turno, lo que se agradece.

📸 Tip fotográfico Si buscás una buena foto, te recomiendo acercarte por el lateral que da al Retiro o desde el centro de la rotonda (con mucho cuidado, ya que hay tráfico). Al atardecer, las luces del cielo y la piedra crean una combinación preciosa.

🔹 Free entry and open 24/7 One of the great things about the Puerta de Alcalá is that there’s no entrance fee. It’s an open-air monument, so you can visit it any time of day, with no restrictions. It’s perfect for tourists who want to explore Madrid on foot without spending money.

🌞 My experience I visited at midday, with 35°C weather, and honestly, the heat was intense—almost unbearable. I had to leave early because of the direct sun and the hot pavement. If you’re going in summer, I recommend visiting around 8:00 p.m., when the sun starts to go down and the atmosphere is much more pleasant. At that time, the golden light also gives the monument a magical look for photos.

👥 Is there a line? When I went, there was a short line to take pictures right in front of the monument, but it moved quickly. Most people were respectful and waited their turn, which was very appreciated.
