Puerta de Alcala is a gateway landmark situated in the middle of the roundabout at the Calle de Acala and Calle de Alfonso XII junction at the northwest corner of Parque Del Retiro. This important monument was part of Carlos III efforts to modernise and beautiful eastern Madrid when constructed (1769-1777). It has three center arches with two rectangular shaped openings at its ends. Designed in Neo-classical style, the pediment is modestly decorated including sculpted young angels seated across the top. There are landscaped grass and flowerbeds on both sides of Puerta de Alcala, making this an attractive monument to photograph at this time of the year. Unfortunately, there is much traffic on all sides of the monument. However, you can take pictures from across the street near the Parque Del Retiro entrance. If you are patient, you can occasionally snap unobstructed pictures in between passing vehicles. Overall, Puerta de Alcala is a nice arched monument that is interesting to see in this area of Madrid. Its worth spending a few extra minutes to walk to its location if you take interest in viewing historic landmarks like these during your travels.

It’s always great to see a city’s historic landmarks, Puerta de Alcalá is no different. It’s important to go at hours when not a lot of people are there, as big lines are formed to take pictures. (Go around working hours, weekdays, and you should be fine) The good thing about Alcalá is that Parque el Retiro is just next to it, so you can tick two boxes in your stay in Madrid! Restaurants directly around Alcalá are not cheap however, if you wish to eat at any of this places, be ready to spend a good amount of money. If you wish to go to cheaper places, just walk around the barrio near by and you’ll surely find a good old fashioned Spanish bar. Don’t miss the opportunity to see this beauty.

Located on a large roundabout in Plaza de la Independencia, this neoclassical passageway was one of the five ancient entrances to the city. In fact, it got its name because it stands in the road that led to Alcalá de Henares. Its appearance is similar to the triumphal arches built by the Romans, and it was designed by the Italian architect Francesco Sabatini, who finished its construction in 1778. Since then, the statues, engravings, and columns that decorate the five arches have undergone five restorations. It's currently doing splendidly and is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Madrid. It's worth viewing at night, to admire its impressively illuminated façade.

It is one of the 5 royal gates that allowed people to enter the city inaugurated in 1778. This neoclassical granite arch was designed by Francesco Sabatini, the very first built in EU after the fall of the Roman Empire. It's a precursor of Paris' Arc de Triomphe or Berlin's Brandenburg Gate. It's also cool to note that it has 5 openings instead of the normal 3. This iconic landmark is popular so expect other people to be taking pictures. Usually people line up to take turns. Be very aware of your surroundings as you take a picture as it's a busy roundabout & you wouldn't want to have an accident just for a picture.
