I've always been intrigued about the castle in Chester ,on a nice sunny day walking the city roman walls looking at the castle and wanting to get in and see what is their but the MOD was in position with the army so its always been a no no ,but a on face book it came up English Heritage open and free just book your tickets. .Fantastic news. So much history it dates back 900 years with so much that has happened through time Kings 🤴 knight's and Army's . I took my dad he is 86 years old so no real problem if you can handle stairs to climb up the Agricola Tower and in inner ward walls Fantastic views across the deep river and the race coarse. Definitely an interesting look back in history with the guides and please support them with some cash 💸 or contactless payments it's there only support a great...

The circuit of the Chester walls is one of the most interesting little walks I have done in a long while. As a tourist destination, it's very impressive. There are so many historic sites from Roman to Victorian, all very well curated and preserved. The view over the medieval centre of the city must be one of the most impressive views of a timber-framed city in the UK and rivals the best in Europe. The Cathedral complex is almost certainly the nearest thing you can see in this country to a monastic Abbey in pre-reformation condition. The castle, the bridges, the roman remains, the railway and canal and even the old Roman port which has been silted up for a thousand years are all spectacular and informative. Well...

It's not open often, but the reenactment weekends are great fun and really bring the castle alive with a mixture of costumed volunteers, musicians, EH interpreters and activities. At the Medieval Deva weekend, the focus was on the 15th and 13th centuries of English history. Earlier reenactors filled the courtyard and Agricola Tower with crafts, militaria and a Barber Surgeon while down on the green, the Savile family, Wars of the Roses reenactors, entertained with dancing, archery and living history with the tale of Saint George and the Dragon thrown in for good measure. A great, free day for anyone who...

Rarely ever open. It is only ever open on weekends in the summer (April-October) and even then it is run by volunteers so subject to volunteer availability. The "entrance" is basically a locked gate with "Private land" signs so looks deterring and unappealing. Parts of the external wall look boarded up creating an ugly, unoriginal appearance. Not the castle itself, but the way it is run kinda puts a shame to the rich history of Chester. Still, the City Walls offer great external views of much of the castle, as well as an information board about its history.
