Hark! Attend, ye merry folk, for I shall regale thee with the most outlandish of tales from mine visit to the Bear & Billet Pub in yon Chester! 'Twas an evening rife with absurdity and mirth! Upon mine entry, I beheld a sight most peculiar—a bear, clad in a doublet and hose, didst greet me at the door! 'Twas no mere mortal, but a bear, I say! Verily, I was so taken aback that I nearly tripped o'er mine own feet. Within the pub, the decor was a hodgepodge of the fantastical and the nonsensical. Methinks I spotted a talking parrot reciting lines from Shakespeare, whilst a chicken played the lute with its beak. Such sights didst boggle mine mind and tickle mine fancy. I didst order a tankard of ale, only to be served by a jester who insisted on juggling mine drink before handing it to me. 'Twas a miracle that not a drop was spilled, and I drank heartily, with much bemusement. The patrons were a jolly lot, engaging in the most nonsensical of games. I didst partake in a contest of who could balance the most spoons upon their nose, and verily, I was bested by a chap who claimed to be a wizard. As the night wore on, the revelry grew ever more absurd. A sheep, dressed in knight's armor, didst challenge me to a duel of wits. I graciously declined, for how could I best such a valiant creature? In conclusion, the Bear & Billet is a place of whimsy and wonder, where the ordinary becomes extraordinary, and where one might encounter the most peculiar of sights. I shall return anon, for 'tis a most delightful abode of absurdity and mirth.

Cosy traditional styled pub. Came here for a nice bit of pub food and a real ale pint. Considering it's winter and normally pubs put on their dark ales the best this place could offer on their guest taps was a Golden Ale, I'm not one for IPAs which were the other options, but alas they were missing a good winter porter or stout. The vegetarian lasagna tempted me, whilst my dad went for a nice traditional steak and ale pie. The pub wasn't too busy when we were there and our food was served quickly. His pie was nice and presented in a big dish, swimming in gravy with salad and parsnips. His chips were served on the side in a nice little tall bowl. My lasagna came with garlic bread (fantastic) and a generous portion of salad. Unfortunately the lasagna itself was too Mascarpone based and had little to no flavour due to the autumnal vegetables used within. The garlic bread was cold and saturated with butter making it soft all over, no crispiness there to enjoy. The salad was nicely dressed in vinegar but the red onions and spring onions in there overpowered everything else. So three stars for the food and drink choices, and it earns a fourth star for being a beautiful, cosy pub. I seriously feel as though I'm in a roleplaying game! Also full marks for their powerful hand driers in the toilets! Good show!

My wife's family are from the area, and we came to visit with the kids. Her cousin decided we should have a pub crawl, and I recon it was a great idea. We started our evening at the Bear and Billet. This pub is older than my country (from Canada), and on that note alone, the experience was amazing. Had a great lager, the service was spot on, and the ambiance was everything you'd want will meeting with a mate for a drink. Looking forward to having a few more! I would have put zero stars if allowed! We have visited this pub a few times but after todays visit we wont be eating here again. The menu had been changed to a very limited one, Fish and chips , pie and chips and festive burger. The fish meal had sold out so we opted for the homemade steak and ale pie, chips and mushy peas which we have had in the past and was outstanding. It arrived eventually, it was luke warm , the pie was NOT homemade , the chips were soggy as the meal was totally covered in a jellified gravy and the mushy peas slopped in the middle of it all. We advised a member of staff it was cold and he appologised and said it was his fault it had been standing in the food lift!!!! He said he would sort it with the kitchen, 10mins later it arrived, it was hot but it had been blasted in the microwave so was now even soggier and the pastry on the pie was hard where it had been overcooked! Something has gone drastically wrong with the kitchen side of this pub that needs sorting before there is a case of food poisioning! Otherwise the pub is quaint, and a lovely atmosphere . Cannot recommend any dishes as per this review site as it is totally out of date! And no other...
