It's amazing to think that medieval knights once rode out of Chester across this now very busy road bridge! It was built around 1387 and replaced earlier wooden structures that were washed away by floods. The weir next to it is even older, constructed in the 11th century to power corn mills along the riverbank. Despite frequent heavy motor traffic, the bridge is safe and easy to walk across, thanks to the one-way system, a pedestrian walkway on one side, and V-shaped refuges on the other. Lovely river views from both sides, and there's also a salmon leap close by. The Bridge Gate, which leads you from here into the city centre, dates from 1782, built to replace the old fortified medieval gate, and is part of the city walls. There's a great view of the bridge and the weir as you walk across it, and an information panel with some interesting historical facts. One of my favourite...

Lovely area for a relaxing walk despite the noise from the weir and fast flowing river. An historical crossing point from England to Wales although borders have moved somewhat since then. If you're looking for a boat trip along the River Dee then this is where you'll find them. Makes for a nice short circuit walk if you walk to the Queens Park bridge across to the far bank and turn back towards...

The original Bridgegate is recorded to have been built by the 1120s. The gate guarded the southern entrance to the town and the North Wales Road ran through this gateway after crossing the...
