Came in last week to see what changes have been bestowed onto the museum since my last visit a year earlier. It's often been the case over many years that the NMMNH does its best with the limited number of resources available to them. I say this because for whatever reason, this museum appears not to have the same level of funding nor community sponsorship that other museums in Albuquerque apparently do. Despite this, tickets prices are reasonable. If you wish to catch a planetarium show or see a special exhibit, you will have to pay a little extra. Special deals are offered however. Such as free entry on every first Sunday of the month. Upon my latest visit, the first thing to catch my eye was the state of the art animatronic dinosaur stationed in the lobby. It comes to life every 30 minutes and is great addition to the museum. The rest of the museum however needs a little tlc. While it is kept clean and the staff are helpful and friendly. Much of the museum hasn’t changed a great deal since I would visit as a kid during the early 2000’s. Most of the interactive exhibits definitely show signs of their age. The decaying carpet and paint in many areas of the building are difficult to ignore. Plus, during my last visit several parts of the museum (such as the volcano and time machine exhibits) were either broken or closed off to visitors. In all, the problems that plague the NMMNH have little to do with how the place is managed. The staff and curators do their part well and without them the museum would be in a true dire state. The necessary funds are simply what it needs and so desperately lacks. However, if either you or your children have an intrigue for the natural sciences, this museum is still...
Read moreSo my husband and I came to Albuquerque to visit my mother in law, sister, and other family to handle some business. 😊 So, every time we come in, I'm always want to go do something around here. (There is a lot to do)🤯 I love some type of museum, so we picked this one. What can I say about the New Mexico museum of natural history and science? It was absolutely my blowing.🫨 There is so much stuff in here. One lady that actually works here. Name Mrs. Sharon. She is part of the janitorial team. She told me it took her 4 hours to do everything and read everything.🫣 So on this day, my mother in law, my sister in law and her precious grandbaby, we all piled up and came out here, and we enjoyed every bit of it.☺️ I probably took over 200 something pictures. I don't know how many videos, but. I didn't want to miss a thing. Because I wanted everyone to see how spectacular this place is. Plus, 3 of the exhibits are traveling exhibits. They were saying it's cheaper to get a membership if you plan on coming 3 times or more a year because each time you come, there will be something different. Plus, you get 50% off If shop tickets to the movies and I think something else🤔 They are also adding new things all the time. Upcoming attractions, kids and adults alike will love it, so if you're ever in albuquerque, stop by and tell him Mrs. Allen from Texas told you to stop by😁I hope you enjoy the pics and videos🥰🫶✌️ Ps. So I forgot to tell ya'll if you look through the pictures and you see the dinosaur that is outside. Please blow the picture up.There was a bird and her nest and babies in there. We thought it was really cool also if you want to see more of my pictures look on...
Read moreI visited with a group of adults. We enjoyed the new Fact or Fiction Sci Fi exhibit; it had a bin full of parts for building your own rover, but nowhere to sit down and build. We went for it anyways and hovered over the bins while we worked. I think kids would like it too! Definitely needs a work space.
The Hall of Stars let's groups navigate and view different constellations, but only 1 group can use at a time. We waited for about 10 minutes then moved on. It was still fun to observe the constellations as a family controlled the helm!
The Ted Turner Wild lands exhibit had some amazing fossils and a beautiful butterfly exhibit made by a local guy, but the rest is just a bunch of wildlife photographs with Turner's name all over the place. There wasn't any information about the conservation efforts on his private ranch holdings...just some rich guy's photography.
We enjoyed the permanent New Mexico walk through time exhibit. It was fun to view the giant redwood tree slice and human events throughout its lifetime. There are dinosaur fossils, interactive exhibits for matching animals to their diets and a moving model of how herbivore and carnivore teeth move. The cave walk was our group's favorite with real dripping water and illuminated cave features.
We watched the Animal Kingdom 3D show in the Dinotheater and it was enjoyable, not too crowded. The woman at the ticket counter recommended it to us because several school groups paid to go the other show in the planetarium! Whew, thanks!
Also, we love the giant animated model of the Bisti beast! It never gets old hearing kids scream and laugh as it roars! Gave our group...
