I’ve been going here for nearly a year now and I have to say this is one of the most ragged LA fitness in Atlanta.
There are a couple things that make absolutely no sense: All of the workout benches are bolted down except for one. So if you wanna do a bench press on the Smith machine, you better Hope that the single movable bench is not being used.
Absolutely, nobody racks their weight of this gym An employees will watch people walk away from their unwrapped weights and not call them out. I get it. I’m sure they’re not paid enough to do that, but it would be nice to go to a gym where our policy is reinforced..
They have Single sets of the most commonly used weights: 15, 17.5 , 20, 22.5. And because no one racks anything good luck looking for them
They have one fewer Olympic bar that needed. Which means that if you wanna do straight leg deadlifts, you better hope that no one is currently using the bench presses.
The classes That run do not have enough weights for all the attendees so often the dumbbells go missing and will be used by people in classes for several hours. Again, because the classes are using the most commonly used weights, good luck trying to find a 17.5 pound dumbbell When a class is session
The pool is permanently and perpetually closed. They have no plans to reopen it.
They don’t have a policy against recording yourself or recording other others, So there are more than a handful of people setting up tripods cameras, recording themselves And inevitably recording you.
I don’t change in the locker room anymore because everybody is taking selfies in there.
There was a leak in the ceiling sometime ago And there are still missing tiles. There’s clear water damage coming through. That’s not the gym‘s fault, that’s definitely the landlord‘s fault. But it just kind of reminds you that you’re working out in a subpar building.
But it’s not all awful:
This is one of the most actively cleaned gems I’ve ever been to. There’s always someone vacuuming, someone wiping down mirrors or equipment. They do a pretty great job of keeping up after their messy clientele.
The staff is really fantastic. They’re probably the main reason why I keep coming back next to accessibility. They’re always friendly, chill, greeting people. I’ve never felt unwelcome. If you work at this location, you deserve a raise and you know that!
I find myself still coming here because it’s convenient, it’s easily bikeable from my house, and the staff rock. I wish the facility was better taken care of. I wish they’d order more dumbbells, provide needed dumbbells for classes, provide more curling and Olympic bars. Convert the pool to another weight room if there are no plans...
Read moreI've been going here for over a year now, purely out of convenience since I live nearby. I've worked out an average of 4-5 days a week for around 10 years now and have been a member to many gyms—over half were LA Fitness locations. This one is easily the most atrocious in every category I can think of.
First off, it always smells and there are regular leaks that leave half of the carpeted area drenched. About once a month when that happens, you can expect to add mildew to the list of smells you'll encounter at rush hour. When you reach the heart of the cardio area, you'll notice the air becomes heavier with BO and the humidity makes the smell that much harder to handle.
I've always been a big advocate of telling my friends who are intimidated by public gyms that it's really not bad. But I don't bring my friends here as guests who are easily intimidated. There is more ass silicone than muscle mass under this roof. Half of the machines are being used for something other than what they are intended for—usually texting. Ask if you can actually use the machine at your own risk. Even if it's one of the employees, since half the gym is reserved for people who pay extra for "personal training" and they always get preference. Weights are never racked. Paper towels are rarely stocked (especially on weekends). Machines stay broken for weeks. The water fountains are wiped with some kind of cleaner that leaves them smelling like paint thinner. Theres always one token guy in the free weight section at rush hour who has reserved out all of the dumbbells between 5-20 pounds and demands he's using them all before he goes back to texting. There is zero enforcement of any kind of basic gym etiquette, which means you'll have to be kind of aggressive if you want to complete an actual working in a reasonable amount of time.
The basketball court is pointless, if it's not closed for some kind of maintenance in the first place. If you're expecting to come here to casually shoot around or play a pick up game, it won't happen. This basketball court is more like an extension of a high school courtyard. Everyone is dressed in their best swag, holding the balls off court while they play on their phones. Look out for the token guy with one of those white hover boards that are popular on Vine.
I brought an ex girlfriend here and it felt like walking into a cage of abused pit bulls with a slab of meat, except the pit bulls are wannabe "mr steal ya girls." For the record, no one stole anything from me other than my faith...
Read moreI'm not an Atlanta native, but the company that I work for is based in Atlantic Station and I come here at least once every month or two, so getting a local gym membership made sense. I'm currently a member at a couple of other gym chains in Texas and I've worked out in all sorts of environments for over 20 years now. I'm mid-30's, male and not easily put-off, but this gym is absolutely terrible.
I've been to dirty and unkempt gyms before and sometimes that's OK, it's part of the allure - maybe a hardcore lifting facility with no AC for example - that makes sense. What doesn't make sense with this gym is that LA Fitness is a national chain and most every location I've been to is comparable to other national chains (cleanliness, building, parking, clientele, etc). This LA Fitness is a quandary and they should be embarrassed to have their name associated with it.
As other reviewers have mentioned, it's just disgusting everywhere and the clientele is some sort of amalgamation of the bizarre and riff-raff, especially at night. It's sad, because you can see many 'normal' people here, especially in the morning hours because it's really the only place (national gym) in this area. I won't go near the locker rooms, they are dirty and sometimes a pick-up lounge or at the very least a perv-out-lounge. The floors throughout the gym are wet, mildewed and dirty all of the time. The moisture coming from the pool/hot tub/bathrooms makes it humid, which is magnified in the summer. This adds to the quicker degradation of the equipment, which is all rusted and broken. There is an always present 'stink' of must, mildew and body odor because of all of the aforementioned issues, which is just intolerable sometimes.
The staff (sales, service and trainers) are mediocre at best. No one seems to maintain the equipment. Never paper towels and the water fountains are dirty or sprayed down with heavy cleaners, which either way renders them unusable. Weights are left everywhere and never put back, or if they are, usually in the wrong spot. I've also noticed a lot of the same regulars, that most of the time are in 'clicks' and tend to dominate equipment, much of the time with their phones as well. Cell phones are a problem at any gym, and they are here as well.
I've been coming for ~10 months now and I can't take it any longer, I'm going to cancel my membership (which should be a treat, based on other reviews/feedback on...
