I RARELY take the time to review establishments, whether good or bad, yet feel compelled to leave this sincerely honest one. After reasearching more than a handful of stores that sell oils, incense, resins, botanicals, etc., and reading some not so favorable reviews of some as well as stores being too far away, I started with Secret Essence & Beauty, which was first on a list of 4 stores to venture to.
The store is 90% self-serve with the remaining 10% spent at the oil counter. Before I leave a review I like to test out all of the products first, which I did. I purchased the Jasmine Flowers and Lavender Flowers , both of which are excellent quality. Needing the Lavender the most, I was biting my nails having read endless Amazon reviews of multiple vendors sending out dark brown, barely purple buds and finally exhaled because ALL OF THESE BAGS are consistent with the way lavender is supposed to look and there is barely a pinch of stem-dust in the bag and all of the other bags were of the same quality as well. Some also mention the strength of smell in reviews. Though I do smell the lavender and it's fine with me, I'm only using these as product embellishments.
Next are Incense cones, (Peach Papaya & Black Love) which burn very smoothly and are wonderfully fragrant with the scent remaining the same from initial lighting until it burns out with absolutely NO burnt wood/funky/rotten/toxic scent some cones tend to emit.
Next (Palo Santo Crushed). For those concerned about purchasing saw dust with no scent (AMAZON, LOL), this is the real deal. I made my own palo santo spray using the sticks and it smells the same. You can smell it by opening the bag yet I placed several pinches in separate intervals on my charcoal while testing products and they all were consistent with the traditional palo santo scent.
Next (Myrrh Resin). There are many kinds of myrrh resin so if you google images of "Our Earth's Secrets Myrrh Gum Resin RAW Standard Grade", that is exactly how these look. I'm guessing the RAW means more natural and "drier" so being concerned I broke some up and put them on the charcoal. Not having burned myrrh on it's own I didn't really know what to "smell for" but once I added some of my frankincense, all was ok. The more it burns, the more the lighter-colored/gummy resin comes out underneath as well as the full bodied scent.
(Oils) Champagne Toast, Black Raspberry (Both AMAZING. Once I let a waiting customer who makes candles and bath bombs smell them, she added those to her order). Himalaya By Creed M, Pomegranate Blackberry, and Black Orchid M are equally amazing as well. Though I am not a stickler for a scent lingering on me for several hours as I don't mind reapplying, I could still smell all of these on me after 6 hours, (placed on various parts of my body, LOL) including the Black Pepper essential oil I got as well. These all can be great stand-alone scents but I got these to experiment with as potential blends with other oils I already have.
This was my first time coming to this store and I was amazed that EVERY SINGLE CUSTOMER that came in called out to Mohamed by name, which let's me know these are returning customers. As Mohamed multitasked behind the counter assisting 3-4 customers at a time, ALONE, he was obviously in his element as I am a multitasker too, and NO ONE was impatient and it was great to converse with business owners coming in for their supplies while we waited. I'm from New York and I've missed that small community-familial camaraderie. If you have a business that is scent oriented like mine, you can easilly spend hours at that counter like I will, LOL, but I'll do it in multiple visits as this will be MY NEW one-stop-shop for all my business needs. An added and completely unexpected bonus was the free bar of glycerin soap Mohamed gave me when he found out I was a first...
Read moreThe WORST customer service EVER.. The man is a scam artist as well... I came shopping for an item and didn't know how much of the item I wanted.. The man proceeds to get nasty, turn away my service because I asked how much the products are.. He asked how much I want.. I said "I don't know.. It depends on what the pricing is and I will determine from there.." We are having a back and forth about pricing and he gets real angry from there... He starts yelling and getting irate all over a question... Which doesn't make sense to me... I've shopped here once before and he was delightful when he saw how much money I was spending... However, this day was rather interesting... The levels of disrespect were egregious.. He was very kind to the man that he was serving.. I wonder what the issue is with women.. He was like that with another friend of mine as well... I suggest you be mindful spending your money here.. He has NO PRICES on anything, so he makes up whatever pricing he sees fit to charge you in the moment.. Everything in this shop can be found at AFRICAN SHOPS or ONLINE...
