The sculpture was commissioned in 1859, modeled in 1864, and cast and dedicated in 1869. The bronze measures approximately 22 x 6 x 15 ft, and rests on a granite base that measures approximately 16 x 8 x 15 ft. It was surveyed by the Smithsonian Institution's "Save Outdoor Sculpture!" program in 1993. The monument was conceived in an effort to present Massachusetts as an artistic center. The chairman of the fundraising committee for the monument, Alexander H. Rice, declared in a speech from 1859: This statue shall exhibit the resources of our own State in the production of works of its class. The artist is a citizen of Boston; the statue will be modeled here; it will also be cast in bronze at some one of the foundries of Massachusetts, and it is expected that abundant funds for defraying its cost will flow from the generosity of our own people. Over the years, the statue's sword has repeatedly been broken and stolen; to avoid continually recasting a bronze replacement, caretakers installed a fiberglass substitute.

The George Washington Statue in Boston is an iconic bronze equestrian monument located in the Boston Public Garden. Unveiled in 1869, it was created by sculptor Thomas Ball and stands as a tribute to the first President of the United States. The statue depicts George Washington in full military uniform, seated on horseback, gazing forward with a stately presence. Positioned prominently at the Arlington Street entrance of the Public Garden, it has become a favorite spot for visitors and photographers. Surrounded by seasonal flowers and the scenic pathways of the park, the statue symbolizes leadership, strength, and the historical legacy of the American Revolution.

One of the interesting things to see at the Boston Public Gardens is the Equestrian Statue of George Washington seen facing the Arlington Street Entrance. This statue was created by local sculptor Thomas Ball and unveiled to the public in 1869. It is an equestrian figure of the American first president in military attire, placed upon a pedestal. It is a nice image of Washington, fairly typical of 19th century statues of military and political leaders. Have a quick look before making your way to other interesting monument in the gardens such as the attractive Ether Fountain and the Making Your Way for the Ducks statues northeast of the garden lake.

got a big but on the horse and the GW is really serious on this horse. We could have elected others during 1776 to be the first p resident of USA or the colonies. pee resident. Forest Gump. Seems like historically we know only where the pee residents lived and cannot confirm or deny the housing of any others. They made this statue. Someone decided to cast a statue when in the 1800s. Did they make the statue there in the park or load it in a wagon strap on the horses and direct the horses down the street to the park to hoist up the statue. Also how did they make the mold for the statue? Is the mold made out of plaster?
