There is a lot packed in to this wonderful museum. You gotta watch out though it is easy to lose track of time there's a lot covered. It honestly has been one of the most interesting museums I have been to. It was not expected i mean there was a log cabin inside the museum that was packed full of everything you would have seen back then to every kind of Indian artifact to a still for making moonshine. And yes if I ever get the chance to visit the beautiful city of Bozeman Montana in the rocky mountains again which I'm hoping to then I would most definitely have to go threw the Gallatin History Museum again and see what I missed the first go around... oh and last but definitely not the least the staff were very friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable, and easily approachable if and when I had...

I'll preface this by saying I don't have a lot of experience visiting small historical museums. We went in on the first day of a family trip, with the hopes of finding some fun historical info about a distant relative. We were lucky enough to get Kieran as our tour guide, and he was extremely knowledgeable and could weave historical narratives into a fun tale of drama and intrigue! He was also kind enough to dig up extra research about said distant relative, provide recommendations for local restaurants, and was happy to show us around and answer questions about the archive. He clearly has a lot of interest in what he does and was a very fun host!

Thank you Kieran and the Gallatin History Museum! We were...

This museum is much more than you'd expect from a normal small town museum. There is a TON of history and a TON of really cool items, along with detailed stories to paint the picture of Gallatin area history and the people who called the area home.

It's also a somewhat interactive experience. You can go inside the old jail cells, read the inscriptions on the cell walls carved by inmates, lay in the bunks, etc. The receptionist is a sweet, knowledgeable, fun gal and was happy to explain the artifacts and answer any questions we had.

They really should be charging more than the $10 entrance fee. I thought we'd be in and out in 30 minutes......Give yourself at least an hour, and it still...

Superb Museum of Regional History! It's also within walking distance from most of Main St, it's affordable, and it's fun. Frontier life and law enforcement will command your attention once you're inside. While visiting Bozeman, you should prioritize a visit here. Allow yourself a couple of hours though, as you'll easily get lost chasing your imagination around in this converted jailhouse...especially at the gallows and the intense local history surrounding it. And then there's... That Rope 😳 Now imagine that trap door..."snapping down", and then...⚰️ Frontier life & the enforcement of "the law" Twas a tad different back then, wow

EXCELLENT history museum. If at all possible, try to get one of the staff to give you a tour (or at least a partial tour, makes all the difference in the world). We had a docent whose family is 4th or 5th generation in the area so she was very knowledgeable. I found the prison and prisoner info (including the gallows) fascinating. If you're a history buff give yourself at least 2 hours to tour this museum. The installations on the early homesteaders is also worth checking out. A real highlight of my visit to Bozeman.

An interesting small local museum in the old county jail. Not expensive to visit and easy parking out front. Lots of jail history exhibits but also lots of pioneer history. A few things kids can touch so great for families. Run by volunteers and self supported. Great bookstore with lots of local history as well as western, cowboy and Yellowstone. They also have Montana cookbooks.
