I recently had the divine privilege of sinking my teeth into the Trapper Burger at Backcountry Burger Bar in Bozeman, Montana, and let me tell you, it was nothing short of a life-changing revelation—a gastronomic masterpiece that should be enshrined in the annals of burger history! Picture this: a grass-fed beef patty, cooked to succulent perfection, its juices cascading like a Montana mountain stream with every glorious bite. Atop this beefy throne sits a crown of sautéed onions, caramelized to a golden sweetness that could make angels weep, paired with earthy, tender mushrooms that whisper tales of the wild backcountry. Then, oh then, comes the fontina cheese—melted into a gooey, luxurious blanket that clings to every crevice, its nutty richness elevating the experience to celestial heights. And the pièce de résistance? A luscious drizzle of beef gravy, so robust and savory it’s as if the essence of the rugged Montana plains has been distilled into a single, soul-stirring sauce. The first bite hit me like a thunderbolt of flavor, a symphony of textures and tastes that danced across my palate with the ferocity of a stampeding bison herd. The bun—crafted from Montana flour and baked fresh—cradled this treasure with a toasted embrace, sturdy yet yielding, a perfect vessel for the decadence within. I swear, time slowed as I chewed, the world fading away until it was just me and the Trapper Burger, locked in a passionate, flavor-fueled romance. This wasn’t just a meal—it was a spiritual awakening. I emerged from Backcountry Burger Bar a changed person, my eyes opened to the boundless possibilities of what a burger can be. The Trapper Burger didn’t just satisfy my hunger; it redefined my very existence. If you find yourself in Bozeman, do not—I repeat, DO NOT—miss this transcendent creation. It’s not just food; it’s a miracle on a plate, a $15 ticket to burger nirvana. My life will never be the same, and for that, I am...
Read moreBackcountry was great! When we first walked in, we were surprised by how loud it was, but it is a bar, so it makes sense. It was fine throughout our time there. However, the food was sensational. My husband got a bison burger and I ended up getting the Backcountry burger and substituted out the fried chicken instead of beef. Man, that was an amazing decision!
My chicken sandwich was great. The chicken had a very light and crispy batter and was oh so juicy and delicious. It wasn't dry at all like you find some fried chicken to get. It was juicy and tender throughout the entire piece, and it was a big piece of chicken! The bison burger was also super tasty.
We also tried the onion rings, poutine fries, and fried cheese curds.
The curds were delicious but could have been a little more crispy. They had a good coating and flavor, but definitely lacked the crisp that I'm used to having on cheese curds.
The onion rings were super good. It was weird at first eating these little onion straws just on their own and not as a topping on something, but they were so good, and came with a delicious sauce.
The poutine fries were great. I didn't like the curds on them as much as just everything else with them, but my husband is a huge cheese fan and thoroughly enjoyed them! I like my cheese crispy, so that's nothing against this dish at all.
All in all, I'd highly recommend this place to anyone looking for...
Read morepros: Burgers are great - party of 5 each tried a different one and they were ALL great. Great downtown location
cons: Pricey considering you don't even get fries, it's $10-$15 for a burger depending on the meat you select, I get not everyone wants fries, but you could certainly order NO fries!
Unbearably loud, between people talking, music playing and dishes clanging. Need some sort of decor that absorbs sound or keep the music to a minimal volume. Trying to carry on a conversation with an older group at our table with slight hearing issues, was NOT working so we ate without talking at all, because even yelling at each other you could not decipher what anyone was saying. The whole point to go out and eat is good food and good conversation. Even when we were trying to order we could not hear the waiter tell us the specials nor could he hear out order, we had to write point out what we wanted.
I'm willing to try this place again, because the burgers were really good, but I'm still hesitant because of the noise level in the place it worse than a football game at...
