I hung on to a broken microwave oven for a year because I kept putting off taking it to the Fresno County Household Hazardous Waste place in South Fresno that was open on Saturdays only. This was the place that the City of Fresno said to take it. Then I googled recycling in Clovis and found that Xtreme Electronic Recycling takes microwave ovens and it was only 1 1/2 miles away from my home. They do charge $15 for disposing of microwaves but that's okay with me. A week later I swapped out my sprinkler controller for a new wifi enabled one. After speaking with a representative at the company, he explained to me that on occasion, they sell their equipment rather than recycle it. That any data should have been wiped and that any misunderstanding of what happens with the equipment is my fault. Be aware that this isn't necessarily a recycle facility, they can resell your equipment.

Read moreI have used these guys on multiple occasions to drop off recycling. In most cases it is free but they do stipulate on website when extra fees might be needed (data destruction, etc). Very easy to go by and drop off. Always friendly. They are legitimately getting your stuff properly recycled and by California law now they usually have to take your name and address so they can verify to the state where they are getting the electronics from (this is how you know they are legitimate).
