My haircut appointment was very disappointing. Hair stylist’s body language as soon as she came up to me was already telling about her attitude towards my textured hair. Mind you, she probably also has a similar hair texture underneath it all. She did not even attempt to properly part my hair for the cut telling me it was “matted at the roots”. It most definitely wasn’t. She then told me that in order to properly cut my hair it had to be “pressed” meaning fried at high heat to mimic the straight silky hair that I assume would have been more worthy of her effort. And by the way, I did blow out my hair before the appointment so it was pretty stretched out, just not silky straight like pressed (flat-ironed) hair. I had to go home and part my hair properly to clean up the messy cut that she gave me. I should have just done the cut myself to begin with.
I want to at least thank her for making it obvious that she didn’t want to deal with my hair in its textured state. She was careful not to cause breakage by doing the bare minimum which is 10 times better than styling textured hair without the gentleness it requires. As frustrating as the appointment was, I do not believe that she is a bad stylist in general. She is probably amazing at working on straight hair or textured hair that has been completely straightened with heat tools. I assume that she is herself a victim of the complex relationship that many women of color have with their hair, unfortunately. A complex relationship that I have done the work to overcome and anyone can achieve the same victory to grow a beautiful head of natural textured hair!
She also told me that my hair was dry but as someone who has been caring for my own hair for over 10 years, I know that it wasn’t actually dry, it is just a unique texture that is on the coarse side and I use a lighter moisturizer when I blowdry for a cut which is followed up with a thicker cream when styling.
I do not recommend this Hair Cuttery to any woman of color who actually cares about the health of her hair and doesn’t subscribe to high...
Read moreI started off liking the stylist. She seemed straight out of beauty school. I wanted to be nice and friendly as I always try to be when getting a service done. While she was nice, she constantly scraped my scalp with the comb. I winced and said it hurt a little, she said sorry but then went right back to it. I brought a pic on my phone of a very specific haircut. My hair was to my shoulders so there was more than enough hair to get this look. It took an hour and a half to get a haircut, she originally said she knew how to cut an inverted bob, but she clearly did not. She called the manager? over every five minutes unsure of what to do, AFTER she had cut big chunks of my hair off. She said she needed to blow dry my hair to figure out the cut. I didnt ask for it. What I eneded up with was a very short very choppy bob that reaches my chin. No smooth long wave that tapers down to the chest. My bangs are so uneven a week later I am still cutting off long hairs. I had booked my appointment online for a $26 cut with a %15 coupon. I was charged for a blow dry which I didnt ask for, I was charged the rate the manager charges to cut hair (to help the new stylist). All in with a small tip it was $40 bucks I tipped because I felt awkward and sorry for the new stylist BUT honestly this is a terrible cut I am really unhappy its not an inverted bob its a choppy...
Read moreThis was my first time visiting Hair Cuttery, and unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. I called ahead to let them know I was on my way, even though I would be arriving about 20 minutes before closing. They informed me that since it was close to closing time, they wouldn’t be able to do a hair wash, only a water spray and cut — which I agreed to.
However, when I got there, the stylist didn’t even spray my hair. She cut it completely dry. When I asked her to use water, she said she could manage without it. I specifically asked her not to reduce the length too much, and she said she’d only take off 4 inches — but she ended up cutting off way more than that. I had long hair, and she chopped most of it off.
She didn’t use scissors properly either — she used a razor to speed things up, which made the cut feel rushed and uneven. I asked for a layered haircut, but my hair now doesn’t even resemble that style. She also didn’t straighten it or style it properly, just applied some cream and that was it.
I honestly regret going there. My hair is now much shorter than I wanted, and the result is far from what...
