This library is very beautiful but unfortunately we had a horrible experience here. Libraries are supposed to be welcoming safe spaces unfortunately this was not the case. My husband and my father and I were visiting eureka and wanted to take my newborn to the library for the first time. We were excited. They were having a super cute frog and toad party. As we have done many times when visiting a library we sign up for a card as a souvenir and to use the Libby app. We entered the library and my husband walked to the front desk and excitedly asked to sign up for a card. The man at the desk with a beard barely raised his head from his newspaper looked at him and said um do you even have an ID card. Well it has to have a Humboldt address on it. Oh we’re visiting. Nope. You can’t. And then just went back to his paper. He was so rude, so judgemental, and honestly possibly racist. He could’ve just said I’m so sorry we can no longer do that or politely say policies change. Even though we have done this many times. Instead he could’nt be bothered, had an attitude and was so disrespectful and dismissive. Sadly soured our daughter’s first trip. Everyone else we met there was kind, he was just awful and people like that should be no where near a happy place like the library....
Read moreI visited this library hoping to find a new place to hang out. I'm young and just moved here. Unfortunately, although I love the actual place, I ran into a situation that shook me up so bad I couldn't go back. After browsing there about an hour and a half I was approached by a young man who became agitated at my choice of reading and began growing increasingly irritable and angry at nothing, including repeatedly asking me my personal information as to WHY I moved here to the redwoods and told me on no uncertain terms, I don't understand what the redwoods are REALLY about. He was clearly very high on meth and acting insane. My friend who'd left to go to the bathroom came back and he proceeded to be rude and disrespectful, asking her her gender by saying "So, what do you want me to call you? IT?" (She is tall and has short hair) And we left as soon as we could from that section. I told the front and was very quiet as I was truly shaken up. He looked angry and as if he'd explode at any moment. She said they'd address it. I went to the bathroom and hid in a corner area. Upon realizing he was still there (no one had apparently addressed this) we left. It was horrible and I don't...
Read moreI am visiting my daughter & her family. We went to this library yesterday (Feb 28, 2025) with my grandson's school. We participated in story time which was really fun.
My daughter, grandson, & I went again today (Mar 1, 2025) to attend the Petey's Party event today. There was a Huge turnout for this event.
They had to do two story time sessions because there were so many children. It was beautiful to see all of the parents, grandparents, & children having a fantastic time at the library.
This is a very large library. There are so many books for all ages and every genre.
The staff is the best. Every staff person I encountered, and they're were quite a few, was friendly, professional, helpful, & genuinely happy to assist me & our group and my family.
Shashona is a wonderfully bright ray of sunshine.
Please make sure you make time to visit this library you will not be...
