If you are purchasing tickets for the train rides during the summer months, make sure to ask if the trains you are purchasing tickets for have functioning AC. The particular train ride I took was VERY hot. If the thermostat on the train is accurate, it was 95 degrees for the entirety of the ride. The train is 100 years old which means not all the windows open and the train ride doesn't go fast enough to generate a cooling cross breeze. These trains rides are very popular which also means a lot of combined body heat. If you have any medical conditions where heat or lack of ventilation could pose a problem for you I would recommend going during cooler months of the year and bring water. The particular area I was in had ceiling fans but they did nothing to help cool the area. The building where you purchase tickets don't sell hand fans, cooling towels, or fluids. A lot of people took event pamphlets for fanning themselves to keep cool. Definitely come prepared. I drank all of my water during the ride and would have definitely purchased more had it been an option. I would have purchased a hand fan, rechargeable fan or a cooling towel, had it been an option and had I been warned about the temperature of the train. Such a missed opportunity for them to make more money and affected my enjoyment of the ride. The trains do have bathrooms but no sinks. The employees are great but they weren't mic'd for our particular car so we didn't hear all the information that was being given regarding the trains history. Having said all that, I definitely plan to go back for fall. I'd imagine the foliage will be amazing and the train is so cool looking because of it's age, they don't make them that way anymore, it's worth...
Read moreWe bought tickets to ride the train from honesdale to the station in hawley to attend the lakefest at lake wallenpapauk. The train ride down was fine. Hot in the car without ac, but the gentleman gave history of the area. When we reached hawley, we were given a printed out map of the town. There were no shuttles as advertised to take us to Lake fest. No one to even ask what was going on. We tried getting an uber but there were no drivers in our area. I tried calling the number on our tickets but got someones voicemail. I ended up going into one of the shops, what not trading post, hoping to find a taxi service. The shop owner was extremely friendly and made calls to find out why there were no shuttles up there. She found out that the shuttles had been canceled, but no one had told us. After talking to the gentleman who worked on the train, it was a partnership between the train and the toen and the town had canceled the shuttle the previous day but the train never told us. While I completely understand it was out of their control, I do feel that the people who bought tickets to do the Lakefest should have been told that there would be no shuttle to the lake and it was too far to walk on foot. One of us would have driven our car down. In the end, our entire day was ruined. While it was a nice town, we were stranded there for 4 hours waiting to ride the train back to our vehicle. The train ride itself was enjoyable, but the 4 hrs in 80 degree weather with nothing to do was horrible. We werent the only people who was disappointed. I do appreciate the conductor giving us 2 free train passes as consolation, however we really dont want to go back. All in all i feel the communication should have...
Read moreI am disabled and on a fixed income, I don't get a chance to do stuff like this very often. We drove an hour and a half to get there and when we boarded the train we were directed to a car with open seats. We were lucky to find 2 seats so we could sit together. I noticed lot's of the windows were fogged up. I thought maybe it was from everyone talking. When the tour got underway the windows remained fogged up. I had some paper towels and tried to wipe them off however it was not fog. Between that and what looked like tar drops on other windows about a third of the people couldn't see or take pictures of the colorful leaves. On the return trip they asked everyone to switch sides so everyone could see the view on each side that sounded great. Well there must be more seats on one side then the other because we couldn't change sides, not like the windows were any clearer on the other side either. We were very disappointed that they advertise it as a foliage tour but you can't see through the windows to look or take pictures. I was bummed that I waisted so much money and fuel to make a wonderful memory and ended up stuck on a train for 90 minutes and couldn't see much of anything either way. I think the car drive itself had much better views. They just don't have places to pull off and take pictures. I would save your time and money and pass...
