Cortello Hair Salon — Attraction in Jacksonville Beach

It was a frustrating and upsetting haircut that I got from Emily.

I had been putting of getting a haircut for months because I’m always scared of a new stylist messing up my hair. I finally decided it was time to get my hair taken care of and thought Cortello with its amazing reviews was the best place to go. I came in for a haircut with Emily and a week later, it’s safe to say I am unhappy with how my hair has turned out. The reception staff and style/décor of the salon itself are wonderful- which is why the review is 2 stars.

For starters, Emily was about 25 minutes late for the appointment, which is fine, but it would have been nice if she came out to let me know I was running behind. During the consult, she hardly said a word. And unless I had said anything about my weekly styling habits, I’m not sure she would have asked. I let her know what I usually get done, and she quoted her price and started on the work. The shampoo was less than great- my scalp was itchy and oily the next morning (and I can usually go 3 days between washes), but the massage was a nice touch.

However, the haircut was awful. At first, Emily hardly took any length off even after I had warned her it’s been months and I want the split/dead ends gone and don’t mind going up to 3 inches shorter. The only area that got cut shorter was the pieces right around my face- and they were cut too short compared to the rest of my hair!

The absolute worst part, however, was when I told Emily that I did not like my hair and asked if more length can be taken off to make it look right and I was told “I don’t want to take off more length”. As a customer I was shocked, it’s my hair, and I’m asking you to fix it which involves cutting it so please fix it like I ask.

I ended up initially walking out of the salon very unhappy. I walked back in about 5 minutes later asking to be seen by someone who could fix my hair. Unfortunately, the only available person was Emily. After I finally convinced her that I don’t mind going shorter if it means my hair looks good, she made the haircut better- even taking the weight out of the layers like I asked her to do in the consultation.

7 days later, I’m still not exactly happy with the haircut. It’s passable, but after washing and styling at home, I think my hair looked better before the haircut with months of growth and split/dead ends. I think its fair to say that your hair should look better after a haircut, not worse.

For all this, I would not go back to get another haircut from Emily. I’m not opposed to going back to Cortello, because it can’t be a fluke that so many people like the service they get, but I’ll definitely be more cautious about the stylist I pick...

I never really write reviews. I usually don't have anything negative to say when it comes to businesses I encounter. However, I will have to say that my experience at Cortello was not great at all. I will say the people there are very sweet and bring you complimentary water, but their stylists seem to not understand how to cut, trim or even style hair. The first time I went, it was because of the many great reviews that I saw on yelp and what not. My stylist was Hannah, and the reason why I chose her was because I had heard so many great reviews about her. Just a bit of information from me, I'm very picky with my hair because it grows so slowly. If may hair get's ruined, I'm stuck with that look for the next 3 months. So Hannah cut my hair, I brought in pictures and explained to her what I wanted. It was too short. Next, I felt bad for my haircut. I tried to sleep it off, and couldn't, so I called Cortello the next day and tell them how disappointed I was with the Stylist and whole trimming experience. They kindly apologize and set me up with a Master stylist, in which I get two complimentary cuts with her. The next day I meet with her, and I tell her that my hair need to be textured because the other style just made my hair look flat which was very unflattering. The master Stylist Does some strange form of cutting i've never seen before, and my hair is even shorter with no texture and still flat. I told her and even showed her how other stylists have textured my hair before, and she said that she can't do it that way. The way she does it is easier and better. 1 month later, I go back to her for my other complimentary haircut and explain to her exactly what I want and how I want her to texture it. She cuts it short again. By this time, I'm done with the Stylists in Cortello and have decided to let my hair grow long again. I miss my Stylist from Texas. I suppose that Cortello being so highly rated, I would have a great experience with cutting techniques. But it just didn't workout that way. After a year of shopping stylists, I have FINALLY found the best salon in Jax! It all started with my stylist of 5+ years I was happy with but he just couldn't keep it together professionally. He was constantly changing salons and after 2+ years and 4-5 critical times he either cancelled or no showed my appointment I just had to find someone reliable but also talented. I had been dying my hair black for 7-8 years, and recently had a baby. My hair was a complete disaster, I had tons of hair falling out from the baby and growing back, as well as grays starting to come in. I wanted to go lighter so the grays were less noticeable and I could go longer in between coloring my hair. Not to mention one of the stylists I had tried while shopping completely butchered the cut and chopped off 7 inches without my consent. The owner of Cortello Salon, Courtney- super friendly and professional recommended - after very sympathetically listening to my hair trauma, that I make an appointment with Kate. I decided if my current stylist cancelled on me one more time I would give Kate a chance, I can't even tell you how HAPPY I am my stylist cancelled on me AGAIN, b/c I truly believe I have found an even better stylist in Kate! After a year or more of being in a horrible place and absolutely hating my hair, I finally love it again and am receiving more compliments than ever! I could not be happier with my hair and as long as I live in Jacksonville I will never see anyone other than Kate. She is super meticulous and a perfectionist, she went above and beyond to make my color perfect and considering all of the color correction I needed, it was not an easy nor quick feat! I truly don't believe anyone else, even the stylist I had before I believed to be so talented, would ever have spent the time and effort making sure my hair was as perfect as it could be.
