If you made it this far you should ride the Tram to get a great view of Juneau! It was raining very hard the day our cruise ship docked in Juneau. But you can get a nice inexpensive Jacket with a hood in town that is less than half price of what you would pay on any ship. We didn't let a little (lot of) rain stop us from taking in the view up high via the Tram. It was a spectacular view from up top. And even the raindrops added some uniqueness to our photos.
At a cost of $64 for 2 people it was a little pricey. But you can ride up and down as many times as you want to. Once was enough for us. They have a nice size gift shop and a restaurant. Hikers will find a few trails with local flora along with signs showing pictures of what you are looking at. Since it was raining hard-it was not the best weather for hiking-we only took a short hike. Even though I'd checked the weather frequently before traveling to Alaska and it was supposed to be clear and sunny-it rained all day. My tip would be to bring some rain gear just in case-nothing too elaborate, maybe a good poncho and clothes that can take a little rain and some shoes that won’t mind getting wet. That way you won't feel you can't enjoy this beautiful city-if the weather is not cooperating.
When I see prices that seem a little high I take it all in perspective. This is a seasonal ride-so they have limited income only during the cruise season when the ships dock as I'm sure the tram may not run all year long. But they still have to pay for maintenance and the upkeep of the tram. You can see where the ride is going before you pay your money.
They have an injured eagle in a cage so you can get a really close look. I believe the plan is to release it-if it can be returned to the wild. There is a guy standing by the cage at all times-must be a tough job. He constantly asked people to please not to use flash-while photographing the eagle. And the “I don’t care what you say, I’m going to use flash anyway tourist”...

The views are stellar and it's a wonderful experience to see Juneau from new heights without hiking up a mountain on one's own to do so.
Most of the tramway 🚡 operators are knowledgeable, out-going, and enjoy what they do. I have yet to meet an employee working the tram that I didn't like! Be aware that the tram, as it's being docked at the top, does slow down and rock gently back and forth prior to it lodging firmly into place for your safe exit on the top of Mount Roberts. If you have a fear of heights, the rocking motion may make you uneasy; and, it's important to note, the tram does have you riding above treetops. If afraid of heights, look out and not down! The lift takes about 5 minutes to go up and 5 minutes to go back down and is made available for either direction within reasonably spaced, short intervals. Once off-loaded, at the top of Mount Roberts, take your time to enjoy the Nature Center, the Gift Shop, Grab a Bite to Eat, and find your way to Father Brown's Cross for Amazing, Awe-inspiring Views that seem like movie back-drops but are perfectly real; a place where time stands still.
What goes up, must come down; thankfully, a tram like the one in Juneau is safe, secure, and smooth. It seems to glide as it brings you back down to earth. It's a brilliant contraption that's well maintained and kept clean. If a tourist, the expensive, round-trip ticket is worth the cost for a once in a lifetime experience like none other. If a local, the season pass would be a good thing to nab as it'll save you money and allow you to travel, by tram, as often as...
Read moreSadly, mother nature was not cooperating with our Juneau visit. Overcast, foggy and raining hard on and off we got to the tram for the 2nd part of our excursion from our cruise ship. This was completely self led at this point. We rode the tram up and I hoped we would be above the clouds but no luck there. Because of the weather we really didn't have a view. Tram was nice and not over crowded. The shops up top were pricy but that's generally accepted in a tourist area. We were starving so ordered some fries from their restaurant with drinks - the service was fast and nice. Again, prices were high, but you're also paying for the shipment of the food up the mountain.
I really, REALLY wanted to go for a hike up there. They have a cool little trail through the rainforest with the occasional totem alongside, but the weather wouldn't let us get far before we were covered from the knees down in mud and water. We turned around after a short time and headed back to the mountain station. Lots of shopping opportunities up there with very nice employees.
I hope, if we ever get back to the area, that the weather is more cooperative. I feel like I didn't get to cover much of Juneau at all, let alone the nature up on top...
