A few years ago, my band started playing The Westport Saloon (which is a fine establishment, and this review does not reflect on them).
The first two times, there were no problems. Tonight was a different story. They had the entire area cordoned off and they blocked traffic. They had metal detectors, security personnel and an insane police presence. They were IDing and searching everyone just to get to the general vicinity of everything. They gave no wristbands or anything, and you had to show your ID again at every establishment.
My band finished our set and people wanted to buy shirts. My wallet was with my gear because I take it out of my pocket to play drums. I ran out to get the shirts from the van, was repeatedly told "you can't go out this way," even though there were doors for me to walk through, and was led on a 10 minute wild goose chase. They had no separate protocol for people who were working and needed to get in and out. I had to argue with a cop just for him to search me and reluctantly let me back in, even though he saw me walk out. I spoke to him and his colleague as I left, because I felt it necessary to remark upon the difficulty I was facing just to get to my vehicle, as someone who was working. He surely didn't forget me within 30 seconds. There was no outward traffic. This was without my shirts, BTW, because I didn't make it to my van before I realized what was going on. I lost money because they've turned Westport into a penitentiary.
I'm from California, so I have no stake in what happens in this area, but what I saw tonight was unamerican, and downright insane. They're not making the area safe. They're making it difficult to access and unprofitable. I know gentrification when I see it.
The kicker: I saw the same homeless man I encountered earlier, in front of the venue, hop the fence to get back in. He was not stopped or detained. For all their pageantry and arrogance, they're still worthless.
Do better, Kansas City. You're...
