Ketchikan Alaska is a beautiful fishing village along the inside “passage-way” of Southeastern Alaska. Only accessible by boat/ship or jet/seaplane. We stopped in Ketchikan as one of our dock stops on a recent Alaskan Cruise via Norwegian Cruises Ship Pearl.
My wife and I spent a few hours shopping, sightseeing and dining in the downtown commercial area near the ships. There is a lot to keep you visited. Time constraints limited us from doing any air or sea excursions.
If and when I go back to Alaska — I would skip the luxury cruise ship part of the journey — fly directly into Ketchikan via Alaska Airlines (or other similar carriers) — book a week or more in a local lodge — and spend each day exploring the region on daily excursions via boat or air — using Ketchikan as our base camp.

A small, very quaint town greeting you with their famous sign. This is a cruise ship stop on most Alaskan itineraries. Ketchikan is only accessible by boat or plane.
The town itself is colorful (I am color blind and can tell the contrast). It is a scenic port town with views abound. It is compact enough for easy walking even with some elevation change/hills. Walking this town was and is my favorite thing to do here. Creek Street (a tourist hotspot) is a nice little walk on a boardwalk essentially with shops and such.
For the tourists, you can visit a hatchery, learn about totems, hike in rainforests, fish, take plane rides, water activities, and book whale...
Read moreWe visited through a cruise and it was one of the shortest land stop we had but this was the best place I have visited in Alaska. The price of the things were really fair and not priced for tourists and the things you can see, do are plenty.
The highlight of my tour here was the Duck Tour where you ride a vessel that's both for land and sea. It was a really unique experience and there was a lot to learn from it.
