My 13yo daughter and I planned a trip to Ketchikan, AK that included 5 nights at a wilderness cabin on a lake in the Misty Fjords National Monument in the Tongass National Forest with two nights on the front end and two nights on the back end at the Gilmore Hotel in Ketchikan. From when we first started planning our trip and booking our rooms from North Carolina to the time we left the hotel to catch our afternoon flight home, our experience with the Gilmore Hotel management and staff was nothing less than superb! Anthe, the manager, is the most professional, courteous, kind, accommodating and genuinely caring lady I have ever met or had the pleasure of doing business with. And it was crystal clear that she takes care to hire, train and surround herself with people of the same character. Everyone there made us feel very comfortable, safe and welcomed. I am certain that our stay at the Gilmore and how well we were treated was the reason my daughter told me that when she’s old enough, she wants to come back to Ketchikan and live / work there because everyone is so nice! The property and rooms were super well kept, clean and cozy and safe with a charming atmosphere. All making me want to come back. But above all were the people, Anthe, John, Caleb, Tanya and everyone else….. and yes, you too, sweet Lola, that made for an exceptional stay. You will not find nicer people anywhere and it is not hyperbole when I say that world would be a so much better place if there were more people like Anthe and her staff in it. Thank you all so very much for contributing to and being such a special part of our trip of a lifetime!
With the utmost sincerity and gratitude,
Eric and daughter Emilia Morehead City, North Carolina
As a side note, recommend you kick start your day next door at Ketchikan Seafood and Sweets Cafe, run by a super nice young lady, Nicolett. She has the best food and drinks. Started everyday with a cafe mocha. Yum! And you can’t beat Annabelle’s next door for dinner! Great food, atmosphere and service! Try...
Read moreFirst off, location is perfect - it's within easy walking distance of so many wonderful little shops, and right across the street from the dock and visitor's center. It's a historic hotel, and I found that charming. That being said, it's a historic hotel. If you're there for a decent night of sleep or a shower, you might consider elsewhere. Our stay started with being unable to open the room door. The electronic key worked, but the door would not budge. The gentleman from the front desk had to come body slam it open and slam it shut. The door apparently had swollen a bit and needs to be shaved down. Every time we needed in or out, we had to forcefully throw a shoulder into it, HARD, or slam it shut. Bathroom door - same. The rooms use a radiator type of heat, and when the boiler is working, prepare for 15-20 minutes of loud, rhythmic banging of the pipes, a little 15 minute break or so, and then another round of loud banging, followed by some blessed quiet, then a round of clicking from the radiator itself. Once that finally settled down, every time a neighbor used the plumbing, the whooshing of the water pipes started in. The bathroom is also rather historic. I have never used such a small shower, including in an RV. There's room to step in, but not to raise your arms to lather or rinse hair. The shower nozzle is moveable, but does not stay in position, so if you're a medium height bather, prepare for water shooting into your eyes, while the water alternates between shockingly cold and scalding without warning (and you can't escape because the stall is two feet square). Honestly this was possibly the most comedic shower of my life, what with all the yelping, elbow banging, maneuvering and cursing. The bathroom area allows another six square feet, which is mostly taken up by the toilet and a pedestal sink, so it was another comedy trying to get dressed. Possibly the worst night of sleep I've ever had in a hotel, but Ketchikan is absolutely beautiful. I'd just never...
Read moreI spent one night at the Gilmore and found it to be satisfactory. The check in process was seamless and no issues at all. I was given a room on the 2nd floor ( lobby, 1st,2nd) it wasn’t a problem for me but if stairs are an issue for you be warned because there is now elevator. This is an older hotel and decorated accordingly. On the first floor is a coffee station which is excellent as coffee and all the condiments to go with it were always available. The carpets could do with a good clean but otherwise the decor is befitting to the atmosphere it is projecting. My room was nice and clean, the bed was very comfortable, the bathroom was good, water pressure and hot water were good. I had a view of the side of a building weathered wood boards, but hey ho. I noticed straight away that I could hear my neighbours on both sides but hoped it wouldn’t be an issue. I eventually went to sleep around 10.30 even though one of my neighbours had his tv on, I put some earplugs in. I was wakened at 1.30am to my neighbours tv, I could literally hear every word, I banged on the wall, no response. I got dressed and knocked on the door, no response. I tried ringing reception, no answer. I returned to m6 neighbours door and knocked loudly, he answered and I asked h8m to turn the sound down, luckily he did. I could still hear it but it was quiet so I eventually managed to get back to sleep. The next day at check out the woman never asked how my stay was and I checked out. I know it’s not the hotels fault if you get a bad room neighbour, but I think if the walls were better sound proofed this wouldn’t be a problem. Again I know this is impractical, I’m just saying. I thought the hotel was expensive considering there is no breakfast, no amenities other than the coffee and the rooms are...
